Description
Set in a quiet corner of the medieval cobbled area of Alston, this architect designed "apartment-style" cottage has been imaginatively developed by the architect owner on the site of former C17 buildings. Millstream has been awarded four stars from Visit Britain and the Enjoy England Gold Award for outstanding quality, and was also part of a winning scheme in the Eden District Council 2009 Design Awards. It is owner managed and has its own individual charm and character, incorporating a wealth of attractive features including solid oak floors, exposed beams and many other interesting little details.
Millstream is one of our two new-build holiday cottages but it has historic origins, being built over the basements of a previous cottage, possibly dating back to Mediaeval times. So Millstream has a split level ground floor with interesting uneven walls and angled rooms. This open plan living space has a light and airy feel with a large window area overlooking the patio and millrace.. Another historic feature of The Butts, where our cottages are situated, is the old mill race which actually runs below our other three cottages. It emerges in an open “leat”, a stone built channel in the terrace just outside the French windows of the living room…..So Millstream is blessed with the relaxing sound of flowing water.

Steps lead down from the kitchen dining area to the living room. There is a downstairs cloakroom on the main entrance / kitchen/dining level. Upstairs is the bathroom, a quirky shaped twin room, and the main bedroom with romantic "Gustavian" super-king bed.

We stayed at millstream over half term, it rained all week but still had a lovly time due to the accommodation being so lowly we didn't mind stay in now and then.
