Description

Rowan Cottage - your great escape!

See our reviews on Trip Advisor!

An ideal retreat from the stresses of a busy life Rowan Cottage is wonderful for a romantic break or family holiday Step back in time as you enter this charming timber cottage with its tranquil atmosphere and old world ambiance.

Styled on the hill bungalows of Kashmir. it was built in 1934 by a relative on her retirement from a life working in India. On arrival Rowan Cottage offers a traditional Highland welcome - a welcome cup of tea, a "dram" of Scots whisky, and some shortbread. Flowers, candles and other special touches make you feel instantly at home.

The cottage has about an acre of wild garden of heather and trees, and is situated beside a very minor road at the head of the Pass of Inverfarigaig, (part of which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its flora) just a mile and a half from the southern shores of Loch Ness. Privacy is assured, as the nearest house is about 300 metres away, and 50 metres down the road a forest track links into a network of paths through Farigaig forest - ideal for a walk with your dog. Whether you like to kick back and relax, or take advantage of the many activities and historic sights to see, Rowan Cottage provides a comfortable and welcoming base.

The partially enclosed verandah offers wonderful open views to the hill on the northern side of Loch Ness - Mealfuarvonie (Gaelic for the rounded hill of the cold hollow.) This sun room invites you to sit back and relax with a book and a 'dram', or perhaps enjoy listening to some traditional Scottish music. On clear and frosty winter nights you may be lucky enough to have a seat with a grandstand view of the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis.

Centrally situated for touring, Cairngorm National Park, Ben Nevis and Glencoe, Skye and the white sand beaches of the north-west are all within easy reach, or you may prefer to relax locally visit the Falls of Foyers, try some Nessie spotting, dolphin watching on the Moray Firth, or go walking, swimming or birdwatching. The RSPB have a hide nearby, where you may see Slavonian Grebes, or you could try your hand at trout fishing with a local guide, or relax with some complementary therapy. Inverness is a half hours drive, for some retail therapy, and local Hotels provide good food if you don't feel like cooking.

From the visitors book:

"The quietest, most peaceful place we've ever been. It's like being in another world. Can't wait to come back."

"Here for the 3rd time. Lovely and peaceful - great place to recharge your batteries."

"We've done what we set out to do - relaxed and read a book or two.

Quiet walks, drank some wine - sat out on the porch when the weather was fine.

Sang some songs, fished some streams; life here is exactly what it seems - peaceful and calm in every way. Many thank yous Janet, we've enjoyed our stay!

Many of our guests return time and time again and become good friends - we hope we may also say to you - "Ceud Mile Failte!" ( a hundred thousand welcomes) to Rowan Cottage.

“Rowan Cottage”

Reviewed 17 Oct 2021

This is a wonderful and charming cottage in a wonderful location. We had a great time getting away from it all to this tranquil and peaceful haven. Rowan Cottage was cosy, warm and comfortable, and very well equipped. It isperfect for exploring near and far. We particularly enjoyed the local forest walks and the great views of Loch Ness. Janet, the owner of the cottage, was welcoming and helpful. We can not praise this cottage and location enough, it is idyllic. Althea and Andrew

“One of the most beautiful places on earth”

Reviewed 13 Aug 2018

Photos do not do justice to this idyllic hideaway. the road leading to it is beautiful with rolling hills, seeing bunnies, deer on the way with hills coloured purple in heather was amazing. The cottage itself is fully equipped with everything a family might need on holiday and the views are simply breathtaking, the hills directly in a front of the cottage look different every time of the day either covered in clouds or in sun rays. There is a beautiful forest just near the cottage that is great for a walk and one of the best things is the scent of greenery an d life around everywhere and incredible silence. We did not do much of touristy things as the village itself was beautiful for walks an d we rested so easily in silence and harmony. Beds are very comfortable and there is a heating as depending where you come from it is quite chilly in the mornings and evenings which was perfect for us as we came up from south. Janet and her lovely husband were both very nice and welcoming leaving us whisky and some fresh eggs from their chickens. One of the best things we did was also to drive to Isle of Skye, it took us about 3 hours using a beautiful route. I personally did not want to leave and evening before we left Janet phoned me to talk about our stay and after I hung up I cried for about 2 hours, now at home I miss it already and truly can not wait to go back one day. You will not regret staying to the Rowan Cottage.
