Description from owner

Description

Blodeuwedd Cottage is located on a single track no-through road and on the edge of the attractive and thriving market town of Kington, a 'Border Town' in the Welsh Marches. It's only 10 minutes walk to local shops, deli, tourist info, post office, takeaways, restaurants, pubs etc. The cottage is named after Blodeuwedd (meaning 'Flower Face'), a beautiful woman who was cursed and turned into an owl in one of the stories belonging to the Mabinogion, a famous collection of old Welsh legends.

The cottage is several hundred years old and is one half of a traditional Welsh long-house. One can see how the central circular fireplace has been divided in two, probably a hundred years ago or more. Both the lounge and front bedroom have lots of exposed beams and many of the walls downstairs are natural local stone.

The cottage is wonderfully romantic for a couple and quite magical for children and therefore also ideally suited for families. We also regularly let to walkers and cyclists. The property is full of character with lots of period features. Charming living room with exposed beams and wood burning stove. Bright kitchen, spacious garden and terrace with BBQ. Fitted with all mod cons such as individually adjustable heating in all rooms, DVD player, Sky TV, internet, fully equipped kitchen, washing machine etc.

Included in the rental are logs, electricity, linen and bath towels. Use of local guide books and maps are complimentary during your stay.

Sorry, no pets allowed (not even small and cuddly ones).

COVID-19 “WE’RE GOOD TO GO”

We have acquired the “We’re good to go” Industry Standard mark for following government and industry Covid-19 guidelines and having a process in place to maintain cleanliness.

Full end cleaning between stays. Professional cleaner wearing PPE. Two-step enhanced cleaning and disinfection protocol. Please note, changeovers are only possible on Saturdays and check-in is strictly not before 3pm and check-out must be by 10am. Self-check-in and check-out through key safe. Provision of handwash and hand sanitiser.

Our cancellation policy is ‘strict’ but if you need to move your stay due to Covid-19, for example because you have to self-isolate and therefore stay home or because you or someone in your family has fallen ill with Covid-like symptoms, we will happily move your booking to a later time without charging you a penalty.

Sky TV. Broadband internet (wifi and wired). Very completely furnished with high quality furnishings and decorated as a home, not a holiday let. Extensive collection of local guide books and maps. Log-burner and free logs plus excellent heating. Very well equipped kitchen with many gadgets. Large fridge-freezer, eye-level double oven/grill, dishwasher. Beautiful slate floor and rugs downstairs, carpeted upstairs. Lovely garden adjacent to castle mound with gorgeous views to surrounding hills and wonderful sunsets. Pretty patio with BBQ and good quality table, chairs and umbrella. Access from the door to outstanding walks including Offa's Dyke National Path and storage space for coats, shoe rack etc. Quiet no-through road but only a few minutes walk from all local amenities.

Bedroom Details:

The main bedroom is very romantic. It has exposed wooden beams and a beautiful four-poster bed with comfy king size mattress. We provide high quality white linen, warm duvets and plenty of pillows. Wardrobe and lots of drawer space. This is an old cottage and the rooms are not huge, but they work as proper double bed-rooms just fine and feel really cosy and special. They are both romantic and the sort of bedrooms kids love. If a fifth person is staying, we have an additional fold-down bed.

Bathroom Details:

Shower and bath. Heated towel rail. Bath seat available.

Getting around

We recommend visitors come by car, as getting around the area is much easier that way. However, we have had many come by public transport (for example direct trains from London to Hereford, bus from Hereford to Kington, short walk from town centre to cottage). Kington is a centre for walking and many paths are right there. Please send a message if you are uncertain about travel to/from the cottage or around the area.

Interaction with guest

Guests have the cottage all to themselves during their stay. I am always available by message, email or phone - before, during and after your stay - and happy to help with anything from directions to tips on what to do and where to eat. When you arrive, you will either be met in person or we can leave the key in a key-safe for increased flexibility.

“Lovely cottage with beautiful features”

Reviewed 14 May 2018

Stayed for only a weekend but found the cottage perfect for our needs. It’s really well equipped, especially the kitchen, the beds are comfortable, bathroom has been refurbished recently and is very modern, comfortable sofa and even a fire place. We loved the owl decorations and lovely old features of the house. Thankfully the weather was good, so didn’t use fireplace but enjoyed a BBQ on patio seating with sun umbrellas and also appreciated the picnic bench at the top of the garden. Shops, pubs etc in Kington are a short walk away. Great location for walking on Hergest Ridge, Offa’s Dyke. We hope to be back later in the year.

“Short stay”

Reviewed 10 May 2018

Lovely well equipped cottage. Picnic table at top of garden was great for a cuppa after a long day walking. New bathroom was a treat. Lounge seating could be improved. Easy access on foot to Hergest gardens and Offa's Dyke path.

“characterful cottage but a bit run down in places”

Reviewed 22 Aug 2017

the cottage was easy to access with a code to get the key. its just off a mainish road, so easy to get places from there. It has plenty of character and the kitchen is well equipped and nice to use. the living room was nicely furnished and inviting, perfect for a couple but not really enough sofas for 4 adults due to its size. the bedrooms were clean, tidy and pleasant. On arrival there was a sign on the dishwasher saying "do not use" with no further explanation- this remained the situation for the duration of the stay. The fridge wasn't working properly and the drain outside the backdoor flooded onto the back doorstep when you used the kitchen tap. I made contact about these problems and the drain was promptly fixed which was good, but the fridge was not- I gather there had been previous attempts to fix the fridge, so this seemed to be an on-going problem. the bathroom was a bit shabby, with a large crack in the sink and chips off the enamel in the bath and what appeared to be hardboard patches on the floor. It wasn't as clean as it needed to be with mould on the tiles. The back yard was looking a bit sorry with what seemed to be broken garden furniture stacked in a corner and it looked like it needed a good sweep and debris that has gathered to be removed. overall verdict, not very nice to sit outside there. a bit disappointing.

Response from the owner Dear Clare, I am so sorry you were disappointed by your stay at our cottage. Your ‘average’ rating is the worst we have had in over five years of letting Blodeuwedd Cottage for holidays and I apologise sincerely! We try to be really honest with presenting the cottage by giving a detailed description and many photos, so people get an idea of size and quality before they book. Unfortunately, the kitchen drain problem was unforeseen and had to be fixed during your stay, for which I apologise! The dishwasher and fridge have also been fixed. Due to our high average customer review rating (4.77 out of 5 on tripadvisor and 4.7 and 4.8 on other sites) we are usually fully booked all summer, so any major repair works have to take place at other times of the year, as we don’t want to inconvenience any guests during their stay. Last year we improved the upper garden and the bedrooms and the year before the kitchen. We already have upgrades to the bathroom and the patio scheduled for this autumn :) I do hope you will come to this area to stay again in the future, to relax in the cottage and enjoy the beautiful area of Kington and the Marches. You would be most welcome! Best wishes, Verena
