“Will not disappoint!”
My husband, Eric, and I stayed at the General's Cabin for our honeymoon last week. I will admit that when Eric initially brought up the idea of staying in a rural, rustic cabin for the week, I wasn't overly excited. But one look at the cabin and the surrounding areas and I couldn't help but fall in love. We opted to take our two puppies which was a great decision. The property that the cabin sits on has private walking trails, a fishing pond and is completely fenced in which we all LOVED! It was so nice to be able to lay in the hammock, grill dinner or enjoy coffee out on the beautiful front patio overlooking the woods and let the dogs run free. Joy and Michael were wonderful to work with- communication was easy and they took the time to add personal touches like roses and champagne at check-in. They even called on our second night to check on us and give some pointers on where to visit. We expected to be on the go for the whole week, but there was enough to do at the cabin that we spent a majority of our time relaxing...which was much needed after the busyness of our wedding the weekend before. Red River Gorge is gorgeous! The trails were great and the lookouts were breathtaking. If you have a chance to go into Natural Bridge State Park, we highly recommend the sky lift to Natural Bridge and Miguel's Pizza. I thought I had, had great pizza before, but this was honestly the best I've ever had. So fresh! And they even had gluten-free options for me! Thank you, Joy and Michael, for lending us your home for the week. It was truly a wonderful vacation and we look forward to coming back and bringing family.
My spouse, 2 dogs, and I stayed for 5 nights. We were delightfully pleased with the solitude of the setting and the uniqueness of the cabin. All is as described ,we have no complaints, and will return. We have stayed many places in search of the perfect city escape-now we found it.!
Wow. Great weekend get away. Oners were easy to work with and very nice. Cabin is great. Aninities are as advertised. Will plan to return!
“Be aware of these considerations”
Location provides solitude and serenity. Be aware, though: 1. Fairly steep hillsides surround cabin, only accessible flat area is around small drive from cabin to road. 2. Cabin only has partial walls, so noise in one room is heard throughout entire cabin. One bathroom is enclosed, however, it has very thin walls and shower and other bathroom noises are easily and loudly heard in both bedrooms. 3. Cell phone reception is spotty. I could not get reception on ipad the entire time. 4. Drive to and from cabin takes some time as it's a narrow winding 2 lane road (no shoulders) It is a peaceful place, but I would say that elegance is in the eye of the beholder in this case
Response from the owner Sorry you were not as pleased as prior guests . The property surrounding the cabin is typical of the rolling foothills of Appalachia. This guest was physically unable, per her own report to enjoy all the property had to offer, including a mile long path that winds through a magical pine forest,or enjoy the vistas overlooking Walker's Creek. Also, very sorry that you were unable to walk the path off the drivway to the private pond with dock and stocked for fishing. There was plenty of level area that could be accessed, from the driveway to the cabin, but sadly rains prevented that during the time this guest was in residence. The interior walls, whicch are golden oak were flush when the cabin was completed, but as the wood seasoned in place it naturally produced gaps. Perhaps, the General should have known better, but it was his first foray into building. Many think the quirkiness of this cabin, which include a wall of windows, some at an angle, a front door made of black walnut with glass inserts taken from the side panel windows of a 74 vega, and the natural gaps that occured over time charming. The cabin is a one of a kind, and not "cookie cutter" in any way. Kentucky is a magnificent place, and this piece of property is stunning ( see prior reviews on this site.) I knew after rehabbing my father's home and providing it to the public for a vacation opportunity these past 10 years that not every one would feel the same way. There is a vacation spot out there for everyone. Thanks for taking your time to provide a review.
“Just do it!”
My husband and I stayed here 2 nights with our 3 children under 5 - we hadn't been in the cabin 30 minutes when we were already discussing if we could get our family to come back with us! It is in an awesome location - near to the gorge hikes, natural bridge - and it's on a private and serene property with a lake, but honestly for me, the cabin itself was the destination. It's an incredible blend of a real log cabin and regular conveniences (except, thank God, no internet on my phone!). (Gas!) stove, fridge stocked with condiments, TV/DVD player, washer/dryer, microwave, pots and pans, towels, bedclothes...It was clean and welcoming upon our arrival and the owners made sure we were settled alright and answered any questions we had. There is a large area with a sectional and fireplace, then another area with a smaller sofa and chair with tv. Above that is the loft area which kids (and others) would love. While it had walls with the 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms set apart, the cabin is also open so I could always tell what my boys were up to while they were exploring around with their flashlight. Books and magazines abound...The lighting is perfect, the whole place is maintained with care and very nicely appointed. There was a grill and seating out on the front stoop...our boys enjoyed playing in the yard and the binder with information about the cabin's builders and history was fascinating. I can't say enough! Just go and see for yourself! **In the boxes where it asks about recommending this property for people with disabilities I'm checking it as 'yes' - the front doors can open wide to allow for wheelchair access and the floor plan is open so navigation would probably be fine. There is a step up to get into the door so I would recommend contacting the owner if you have questions about these possibilities.
“Very picturesque, tranquil and atmosphere made you feel down home.”
The Generals Cabin is a wonderful, secluded mountain top retreat in the woods located outside Lexington, Ky. The weather couldn't have been more perfect for our weekend stay during this time of the year. With that in mind, we were able to really enjoy the picturesque surroundings such as walking the trail to the pond, grilling out and observing the sounds while relaxing on front porch in the rocking chairs. We even heard a turkey gobbling in the distance! The inside was just as peaceful with it's cathedral ceiling great room that has all the amenities of home. Centrally located is the majestic stone fireplace that gave a presence when you entered through the wooden double doors. Just to the right of the fireplace is an eclectic library with a desk that displays the history of the cabin. Quite a fascinating read. We also enjoyed the Natural Bridge Skylift in the Red River Gorge. Other activities available are climbing, trails and a zipline. Which we look forward to on our next stay. Everyone of all ages will remember this beautiful place and their time well spent just as we did. Our gratitude to the thoughtful management.Thank you :)
Recently went to the General's Cabin for the second time and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Cozy, comfortable and well stocked with books, games & movies, lush linens and lovely grounds any time of year, the General's Cabin is just far enough from home to feel like we've gotten away. Joy and Mike are wonderful to make arrangements with and are truly committed to their guests' comfort and needs.
“A gem of luxurious comfort in Eastern Kentucky”
Opening the front doors of The General's Cabin for the first time is like finding a hidden treasure. It's full of wonderment and beauty throughout. All of the luxuries one would expect in a B&B; or boutique hotel are available to the guest, from soft cotton sheets, comfy beds and an amazing space to pass the time. My husband and I went to the cabin with a group of friends who weren't familiar with Kentucky but were interested in the remote location . We were all visiting from NYC and looking for a comfy getaway to escape our lives and worries. We were surprised with the amenities and personal touches that greeted us - a lovely note and flowers from the owner Joy, a kitchen with all of the necessities we needed to cook and enjoy our meals (even some lovely green plates and cloth napkins), nice clean water and lots of indoor and outdoor room to stretch out and read a book or grab a quick nap. The days flew and we took advantage of everything the grounds afforded. My husband and I took daily strolls alone to the pond with morning coffee in hand to sit and enjoy our private moment of quiet, away from the group. As a group, we ventured down the hiking trail that begins right by the door of the cabin and enjoyed the beautiful vistas (our favorite was the evergreen forest and the sound of the wind approaching, a truly amazing thing to see and hear). We also took a drive to the Red River Gorge and grabbed some lunch at a pizza shop nearby. I was surprised that a place I expected to have very little around because of its remote location would have so much to offer. We did our grocery shopping in Lexington before heading to the cabin but when we ran out of some butter, eggs and milk, we were able to take a nice drive to the nearby Kroger, about a 20-25 minute drive away, depending on your speed. I would recommend this beautiful and enchanting cabin to anyone who is looking for a unique, comfortable and luxurious corner of the woods to call home, even for a few days.
“Another wonderful stay at this perfect getaway!”
My husband and I returned to our sweet honeymoon spot for our first anniversary and it was just as magical the second time around! Greeted by roses, champagne and romantic music we had no trouble forgetting our worries and cherishing every minute of our two night stay. The king size bed in the master bedroom is the most comfortable bed we've ever slept on, making it easy to sleep in as late as we wanted! The fully stocked kitchen allowed us to create delicious meals which we enjoyed on the front porch as we looked out on the beautiful woods surrounding the cabin. And the clearing near the end of the path was the perfect place to watch the sunset. We will definitely be returning for our second anniversary and hope to plan a fall trip with our two boys as well. The 2nd bedroom with 2 twin beds and the adorable loft space above the living room make this a great family getaway as well. Most certainly our favorite home away from home!
“Second stay at the General's Cabin”
My wife and I had such a good time here in June 2012 that we came back for a return visit this June. The cabin is the perfect place to unplug, unwind and recharge from the normal routine of life.
