“New Years Stay”

Reviewed 2 Jan 2022

Overall this is a very pleasant cottage to stay in. We stayed a week between boxing day and early January Cottage (general): The cottage is spacious and was clean on our arrival. The wifi worked well, the heating very good and with plenty of hot water for baths and showers. There were good facilities including a washing machine dryer and dishwasher plus downstairs storage space for bags/wellies etc - good for drying after wet days walking! The bedrooms were plenty large enough with two rooms with a double bed and one room with twin beds. Bathrooms fine - showers both good flow and hot water. Location - lovely location on working farm. Adjacent to two other holiday lets and a residential/long term let. Parking on grass about 10m from cottage and no issues regarding this. The surrounding views lovely and access to Keswick, the North and the South very good with local centres such as Rheged great for deli/fuel/shops and soft play! We had a very good response from the owner Katie when the smoke alarms went off spontaneously and could not be stopped. Although it took 3 hours for the electrician to come (from the South) and replace the faulty alarm, it was sorted well and we were offered the other cottage in the interim. Areas which could be improved We have been to a few cottages over the years and noted that, despite the cost for the week, the 'niceties' were absent which was a real shame and definitely would have added to this holiday. I note this has been a similar comment from previous occupants - things like no toilet roll on arrival (very small amount) with no spare rolls, no soap for handwashing, no tea towels or equivalent for drying, no tea or coffee available on arrival (an empty jar of coffee was available); the oven knob was broken and it was impossible to know when it was at temperature (we cooked extra long just in case) - but this definitely needs sorting; although the kitchen was stocked it was a slight mismatch of pans and lids and oven dishes etc (minor point but useful especially if self catering); there was a super useful dishwasher and would have been nice to have just one d/w tablet available - we bought a packet on day 2 but small things like tea and coffee, soap etc make the difference. Some of the lighting was not working. The TV - many would say we don't go away to watch telly (and i would agree!)...however ....after a day out or first thing in the morning with the kids we do pop the TV on. The problem was that very few channels worked, there was no option for 'internet' TV (no BBC iplayer or similar) which would not be difficult to install with a SMART TV as individuals can then log on with their own account etc. It would have been great to sit in the evening and watch a good film but none were available unless on BBC1/C4 as no other channels worked. There was a working DVD player but no DVDs - we bought some from a charity shop and have left these in the cottage so perhaps further could be added. For the cost of the cottage to rent, I would expect the above elements to be present/available/working and it definitely would have improved the stay to very good, especially with two young children! Overall though enjoyable, comfortable and lovely location.

“Half term holidays”

We had a lovely few days (despite being very wet) at the Old corner barn. Location as great for walking. Plenty of space for drying wet coats and shoes. Lots of hot water. Very comfortable accommodation with everything you could need!

“Fab holiday!”

Reviewed 10 Sep 2021

We had a wonderful, comfortable, holiday at this beautiful converted barn. When we arrived late at night and opened the door to the upstairs room such a WOW factor!! The sofa was so comfortable and the kitchen was very well equipped. We lounged on the sofa in the evening after our busy days out at Coniston (climbed the Old Man Coniston, my family canoed and we swam in Ullswater) The weather was stunning. Two very hot days and a cooler day but it didn’t rain. We felt so blessed with the weather. The bedrooms were lovely and very comfy beds and cotton sheets too! The wooden floor was beautiful in the upper room however, if someone was downstairs in the bedrooms and some one was walking upstairs the floor was very noisy above. That is the only criticism. Katie was very receptive and helpful whenever I message her. It was a truly wonderful holiday and we would love to come back. Thanks Katie

“Ideal little retreat for exploring the lakes”

Reviewed 17 Aug 2021

I booked the barn for myself, my wife, my 5 year old and 6 month old, along with 2 dogs and another family due to its relative remoteness but also due to it's beautiful surroundings. 3 bedrooms were more than enough for 4 adults, 3 kids and 3 dogs! The accommodation has everything you could need for a short or even longer break and the home was immaculate when we arrived. Dish washer, washing machine; it's all there. The best point of the property is the upstairs living room/ kitchen/ diner; a great space for eating and socializing and a very comfortable sofa. There is a pub about 15 minutes walk away (the sportsmans inn) and although the new owner Chris is not selling hot food, drinks are aplenty and he plans to offer hot food soon. Driving to Keswick takes around 15 minutes and even less to Penrith. We found a great pub called the boot and shoe inn in a look local village, Greystoke; great food and service. The only downside I found was the upside down configuration but that was mainly down to having a 3 and 5 year old running around at 6am! If you don't have little ones then that shouldn't bother you too much. Be wary of the owner of the house across from the barn. Very argumentative when we couldn't get parked on the grass one evening so had to park outside his house. I explained we had 2 young children but he wasnt having it. I continued to park there out of spite from that point! Overall a fantastic holiday accommodation set in idyllic surroundings and we will be back. Thanks again Katie.

Response from the owner Thank you for the lovely review! Being under new management we particularly appreciate the feedback. Apologies for the neighbours...in all fairness to them, they are generally very friendly and helpful. You must have caught them on a bad day but not what you want when you're on holiday!

“Lovely Hideaway”

Reviewed 1 Nov 2018

After a bit of a journey via sat nav we arrived at the property to find we couldn't get in. Somewhere along the line we hadn't received the communication with directions and key access. After tracking Emily down we were all sorted. The house itself is lovely. Really clean spacious and well equipped. As mentioned in other reviews the creaky flooring really is an issue for anyone sleeping in the bedroom below. We had to creep carefully to avoid waking them. It's for this reason that I couldn't give 5 stars. I would like to recommend that it be noted that this property is only suitable for under 3's if you bring your own high chair etc. Other than that it was an enjoyable stay.
