Description

Angate cottage retains many original features including a large stone fireplace with wood burning stove. There are two double bedrooms ideal for a family of four, with the master bedroom featuring a Victorian cast iron bed and arts and crafts period furniture.

The cottage also includes all modern facilities including gas central heating, bath with electric overhead shower, gas condensing combi boiler, dish washer/ washing machine/ fridge and freezer.

There is a totally enclosed rear patio area providing a safe haven for children and pets and is perfect for barbeques.

Parking is available outside of the cottage however as this is a public road we cannot guarantee parking directly outside of the cottage at all times. There is however ample parking within close walking distance.

Angate Cottage is an ideal base for those who wish to explore the idyllic countryside of Weardale. Fishing, walking and cycling routes are nearby.

Wolsingham is a small market town looking much as it did hundreds of years ago with many stone built listed buildings, period features and links to its long history. In recent years it has become a thriving visitor stopping off point at the base of the Weardale valley.

Wolsingham Agricultural Society holds its annual show on the first weekend in September, with a daily attendance of over 30,000. Established in 1763 it is one of the oldest show in the country and brings in animals and visitors from a wide area.

Wolsingham is served by the heritage Weardale Railway, whose trains run from Bishop Auckland to Stanhope, including special steam train services, the highlight of the year being the Polar Express at Christmas time.

Weardale boasts one of the only outdoor heated swimming pools located 6 miles from the cottage.

Kevin/ Eileen will welcome you to Angate Cottage and provide a brief tour of the cottage and facilities. Should you require any assistance throughout your stay, Eileen and Kevin live locally are only too pleased to assist.

The oldest houses in Wolsingham are at Whitfield Place on Front Street, there are three cottages, the left-most dated 1677 and with the initials 'DM'.

The other properties here have an even longer history. They are said to have been converted from the former Pack Horse Inn where Edward III may have rested on returning from his unfruitful encounter with the Scots in Weardale in April 1327. Another king, Charles II, is said to have ridden his horse up the internal staircase of the house in the 17th century and it still has an impressive staircase today.

Easy access to bus routes.

Demense picnic area , Wolsingham Park, Waverley river all within 200 metres.

Wolsingham boasts a bistro, cafe, bakery, public houses, Italian restaurant and Chinese takeaway. There is also a local Spa, pharamacist, butchers and cash point.

“Cosy, comfy and clean cottage”

Reviewed 4 Mar 2019

We had a lovely weekend break in this cosy cottage which is full of character and period features. This cottage seems small from the front but it has been extended at the back and the kitchen / dining room and back bedroom are a good size. There were only two of us but a larger family would be quite comfortable. The cottage was a little cold when we arrived as it was a quiet period and had been empty for a few days but it soon warmed up when we got the heating on and made a fire in the wood burning stove. The cottage was very clean and well equipped. Our only complaint was that the DVD player was broken, and don't rely on the WiFi for streaming, but that adds to the feeling of going back in time and getting a break from reality. We loved our first visit to Wolsingham with lots of great walks nearby, nice cafes and a lovely gift shop. Buon Appetito was a short walk away and serves reasonably priced but pretty standard Italian food. It was nice to be met and shown around by the owner and that gives an opportunity to ask for recommendations.
