“Charming cottage BUT...”

Reviewed 20 Jun 2015

The cottage is as described, but that does not tell the whole story. I'll begin at the end because that just about sums it all up - when we returned the keys at 9.45am on the Saturday, the owners… More

Response from the owner Firstly, this review and the previous "disappointed holiday maker" review are not from 2 separate bookings, but were sent in by a dissatisfied mother and daughter who stayed for the same week in the same cottage. Their reviews don't tell the whole story either. They wrote to us on returning home, demanding a substantial refund, and we gave a polite, considered and detailed response to their complaints by email at the time, addressing the points raised and explaining why we felt that a substantial refund was unjustified. We received a rude and sarcastic reply dismissing our explanations as "waffle and excuses", and these two reviews followed very soon after. Of course, this may just be coincidence. We have covered some of their complaints in the previous "disappointed holiday maker" review. To respond to this review: we already have the bedroom mirrors but cannot install them until we have a break in bookings in the autumn, due to the adhesive used in the installation having an odour that hangs around for a day or so. We don't keep spare pillows in the cottage, but do have spares in our house (20 yards from the cottage) available on request, and we always make it clear to guests on arrival that, if anything is needed or unsatisfactory, we are more than happy to provide it or put it right: at no time was this offer taken up. We made up two beds for the two people staying, not one! As we do not provide air-fresheners or soap dispensers, clearly these were left by previous guests - however, these items should have been disposed of at changeover, and we have amended our pre-arrival check to prevent such issues arising again. As for cobwebs, our cottages are thoroughly cleaned at change-over: not always so easy to get rid of spiders, though, so the odd cobweb may well appear during the week and, short of fumigating the cottages every Saturday, there's not much we can do about that. The term "main road" can hardly be used to describe the narrow winding street that runs though the village. The sort of traffic passing through the village consists of cars with the occasional bus/tractor/bike. The busy main road is the by-pass around Marazion, which takes the heavy traffic away from the village. As for the dressing gowns, I'm afraid we overslept! This is not something we make a habit of.

Response from the owner We are disappointed to see that you did not find our cottage to your satisfaction. Naturally, we would wish to consider and reply to what you regard as shortcomings. We appreciate your comment about artwork: we have considered this point before, and will be addressing it in the near future. Wifi access to Superfast Broadband is available in all rooms in our cottages, not just in one room, as stated in your review. Concerning lack of kitchen items, we have looked at inventories on several holiday letting agency websites, and can find no mention of kitchen foil or clingfilm being provided (as standard). We find that most guests shop before arrival and buy these items as a matter of course. We do provide kitchen towel. As for cakes scones cream etc, welcome packs are usually provided to welcome people to cottages where there is no personal welcome from owners or caretakers, and you appear to have stayed in such cottages previously. When staying at our cottages we are pleased to provide a personal welcome, meeting guests on arrival, offering them a brief tour of their cottage, answering any questions they may have, and generally making them feel at home. We could provide all sorts of goodies as well, but this would only result in higher cottage prices. We explain in detail on our cottage webpages what we provide in the way of kitchen and bathroom consumables, and the photos show clearly the interiors of the cottages. We really don't believe that a lack of a couple of non-standard kitchen items, artwork and cakes etc constitute describing the cottage as basic, and awarding only a two-star rating, when almost all our other reviews give it four or five stars and are very complimentary about the cottages, seems rather harsh, to say the least. Whether this has anything to do with your prior demand for a substantial refund (see next review "charming cottage BUT", submitted by your mother) we couldn't possibly say. As for renting a more luxurious cottage for the same money - quite possibly elsewhere, but not in Marazion. You may well find better "value" in less popular places, but the only realistic way to check whether you paid the right amount is to compare our prices with other cottages in Marazion. Our prices are mid-range for Marazion, with the result that our cottages are currently (July) booked right through into October and November, with nearly 40% of week bookings being repeat reservations, and bookings already coming in for next year. Marazion is a unique place, in a totally unique setting - it's a one-off. You have to compare like with like to get a sensible comparison of prices.
