About Harbour Island

What makes Harbour Island so charming? Is it the quaint streets lined with tropical flowers? Or maybe it’s the world-famous pink sand beach with its relaxing ocean breeze? Whatever it is, FlipKey has the perfect property there for you to relax while watching the wonderful sunset.

About Harbour Island

Founded over 300 years ago, Harbour Island – known as ‘Briland’ to the locals (say Harbour Island fast to understand the nickname!) – lies just a mile off the island of Eleuthera.

Harbour Island was once the capital of the Bahamas, and the home of farmers and boat builders.

Dunmore Town is the main and only town in Harbour Island. One of the oldest settlements in the Bahamas, this town was popular for making rum during the Prohibition.

Harbour Island has a steep history, some of which is still reflected in the architecture you see around the island! There is always something on Harbour Island that will catch your eye and show off its uniqueness.

The local cuisine boasts freshly caught seafood, especially conch. This large marine snail is a huge part of Bahamian culture and can be enjoyed fresh, fried or steamed!

What to do

With its relaxed atmosphere, you can wake up first thing in the morning and not have to worry about anything.

Its gorgeous 3-mile long beach, that stretches across the eastern shore, is the perfect spot for strolls whilst sipping delicious cocktails. The Caribbean sun is paradise as you walk through the powdery pink sands.

You can enjoy a variety of activities on Harbour Island including snorkeling, bonefishing, scuba diving and even horseback riding on the beach. There are day trips to Eleuthera and Spanish Wells available, as well.

If you get lost, then don’t worry, the island’s small size makes it even more fun to explore. The locals are friendly, and they also make the nightlife more interesting – be sure to check out JJ’s, a local hangout.

Catching the sunset is the highlight of the day, and you’ll be able to witness amazing views by Government Dock.

Top Travel tips

If you're looking to get around the island, then the most fun way is by golf cart! These can be rented from many shops on the island.

There is no direct route to Harbour Island. You’ll have to fly into Nassau and then proceed to take a flight to North Eleuthera airport. You can then take a taxi to the dock and then a water taxi to the island.

The weather is best from December through to April. However, be aware that hurricane season is in the fall, and so hotels and shops are usually closed for the season.

Harbour Island is the ideal hideaway from the world. Its quiet charms make it perfect for travelers who are looking to relax. If it's natural beauty and turquoise bays you're looking for, then browse FlipKey to find the best property for your Harbour Island stay!

FantaSea
Wedded Bliss @ Fantasea

We were married in the living room on 12/31/12. Beautiful setting, plenty of room for our small party. The home was a little old, but it had been updated in spots and was very clean. One advantage that it had was it is new to the rental community, so it has not been used heavily yet. The home is in the Narrows section of Harbour Island, which means it is away from the hustle and bustle, but the road to get there is a little treacherous - some golf cart rental companies wont rent to you in this area so make sure you check that out. The kitchen was well equipped, and there was a small grill outside. The bedrooms are on opposite sides of the home allowing for privacy at night. Each bedroom has a nice bathroom. The ensuite for the master has been recently updated and was nice. There was a lot of storage. The place included some beach amenities (umbrellas, chairs, snorkel etc) making it convenient. We really appreciated the privacy of the property and the beach. The electricity on the island goes out periodically. This happened to us a number of times. The 2nd time the well pump was affected and we needed a plumber. The rental agency responded very quickly and things were fixed asap. The patio outside is a little beat up, but we spent most of our time on the beach so it was of little concern. Overall it was a great place to stay, and if you can be relaxed about things, it's a great place to stay. We'll be back!see more
Little Bay
A Birthday Celebration at Little Bay

My daughters and I returned to Harbor Island after twenty years for a special Birthday celebration, my 70th and my older daughter's 40th. As young people I brought me daughters to Harbor Island during their Spring Break. They learned to water ski in the ocean from Uncle Sam, now Bishop Sam, to scuba dive, and sail a sunfish out but not into shore. On returning to this special place we found Gloria's Starfish Restaurant and Ma Ruby's were still there, that chickens still roamed the street, and the living was easy. Our house, Little Bay, had been recently renovated and sparkled. The rooms are bright and airy, the kitchen well-equipped, and the view breath taking. Little Bay has its own beach and offers access to the Bonefish flats just beyond the beach. My younger daughter, who is very lucky, hooked two Bonefish and landed one. I finally landed one after several days of casting a 7 weight fly rod. Stuart and Vincent Cleare were our capable guides. One day the group went out reef fishing and caught fish for eating. Little Bay was just right for our party of 6 and would have been comfortable with 8. Our 6 person rented golf cart (not the High Roller variety) made it possible for us all to move about together. The location Little Bay on the north bay side provides privacy but does not feel isolated. the person who took care of the house was capable and interesting. There were some biting bugs so take bug spray.see more
Cotton Tree
home away from home

Since 2009, it has become a tradition for me and my mom to meet at Harbor Island, we both live in different parts of the world, so Christmas vacation is the only time of the year we get to meet. Each year we rent a different house on the Island, and so far Cotton Tree House was the best one we had. It was recently refurbished , so all the bathrooms and kitchen are in working and clean order. The overall state of the house is very clean and cozy. The traditional island style of the house makes one feel right at home and acclimated to the local environment. The house is located in the village 2 min walk from the Landing doc and 10 min walk from the beach. We made a point about not renting the golf cart so we would walk all the time. There are several grocery stores minutes away from the house , so it was always easy to get in and out in case something was missing for dinner. The house is also 5 min walk from fisherman dock , where one can buy freshly caught fish. Cotton Tree equipped with a gas grill in the back yard, so freshly grilled fish for dinner was a staple and saved a lot time. The only negative thing I could say, is that our checkout time was at 12pm, but the maid came at 10 to prepare the house for the coming guests, it kind of ruined our last moments on the island, but all in all very happy!see more
Beside the Point Pointless
The Best Birthday Ever!

Twenty-seven years ago, my husband and I, with our two small children discovered the magic and beauty of Harbour Island. Every since we have wanted to return, and so to celebrate milestone birthdays we did, this time as a family of seven, including our 8 month-old grandson. It was a nostalgic and special week, made practically perfect by staying in Beside the Point, a charmingly authentic two hundred year-old waterfront cottage. The location of Beside the Point was one of the many things we loved about it. Spotting the house from the ferry coming into the dock after a long day of travel, we delighted at the short walk up Bay Street. The front porch, basking in light from the afternoon sun made a wonderful first impression. This spot became the gathering spot each evening for cocktails and sunset watching, and it was delightful to see the town come alive from here both morning and night, with islanders and tourists alike. Once through the front door, the house leads you through an inviting shabby-chic interior to a quiet private patio, large landscaped yard, and lovely pool area with a wonderful two-bedroom guesthouse. The three adult couples were each able to have their own space and privacy. The master bedroom in the main house plus the guesthouse with its two spacious en suite bedrooms made for a perfect fit for our family. The larger of the two guesthouse bedrooms was especially luxurious, with a refrigerator, wet bar, microwave, walk-in closet, and double showers. This was ideal for our son and his wife, the parents of the baby, because the closet was big enough to become a suitable little nursery. The owners have a portable crib that they kindly lent us, and our baby happily slept with his parents completely out of view, no black shades necessary! We did not use the two nicely appointed smaller bedrooms on the second floor of the main house, but they would be ideal for a group with additional children. With a baby among us, we planned to make dinner in most nights and found the functional kitchen clean and well equipped. Although we brought some provisions from home with this in mind, there are many stores close by. A Piggly-Wiggly, wine merchant, bakery, deli, and a variety of take-out options are all within a 3-5 minute walk. The attractive covered patio with dining table, comfortable seating and bar is where we enjoyed both breakfast and dinner. The alfresco candlelight evenings in this tropical setting met every requirement. As a bonus, there was not a mosquito, ant, no-see-um, or any other kind of insect all week to detract from the ambiance. Beside the Point’s housekeeper of many years greatly contributed to the positive experience we all had. At first coming across as just a bit territorial, she was easily charmed by the baby, and then warmed up to the rest of us as well. While we all respectfully cleaned up after ourselves, particularly after each meal, it was a pleasure to come back from the beach each day to made beds, fresh towels and a spotless kitchen and bathrooms. Since all of us are devoted beach lovers, we spent very little time around the lovely pool and garden area, but it was nice to have an early morning swim, or cool off after a long run. The draw of the spectacular stretch of pink sand my husband and I had long remembered less than a mile away was irresistible. We found comfortable chairs and umbrellas to rent each day, and with our golf cart, it was easy to go back and forth to the cottage as needed. My husband and I vow to return to Harbor Island much sooner than the last long hiatus, and when we do, we hope Beside the Point will be available. Thank you to the owners and their staff for all the advice and suggestions on everything from restaurants to babysitting to snorkeling. It was the best birthday ever!see more
