This beautiful mountain cottage at 3300 feet altitude is just 5 miles away from the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It's a perfect place to relax and experience the natural beauty of Hawaii. Lots of large picture windows. Quiet, simple and serene. Wake up to the songs of Hawaiian native birds. Retire at night watching the night sky from one of the five picture windows in the bedroom.
The cottage is built 6 feet above ground on the front side (with 14 stairs up to the front door) and sits at ground level in the back. Built mostly of wood and glass with open beam construction, it is tucked into predominantly native forest of Hawaiian Ohia and Hapuu (Hawaii Tree Fern) that is glorious in the mountain sun and mist. Our little cottage has ten large picture windows to give it a beautiful, expansive, tree-top view of the surrounding trees and vibrant plant life. It has one bedroom with a queen size bed, a sitting room with an expansive outdoor view and a small bathroom with a tub/shower. There is an open veranda part way around the cottage as well as a back deck to relax and enjoy the late afternoon sun. The entire cottage is about 850 sq. ft. Very comfortable and spacious for two people.
There is a TV screen (no cable TV) and blue ray/DVD player in the sitting room for you to enjoy movies in the evening after a day of exploring. There is also wireless & cable internet in the sitting room, and a gas fire stove in the sitting room for those cold mountain evenings. The kitchen is fully equipped with a propane stove top, toaster oven, microwave oven, small size fridge and all basic kitchen utensils & supplies. The cottage enfolds vegetarian, outdoor, meditative inclined folks into its embrace.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is just a few miles away. There are lots of nature walking trails and hiking trails in and around Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with one to the summit of Mauna Loa Volcano at almost 14000 feet - a rigorous 3 day backpacking trip. When the volcano is active, you can hike to see lava flowing inland or into the ocean. When visiting you should be prepared for hot and cold and dry and wet.

Right from the start I knew it would be a great stay. The property page said Candice and Richard usually reply with 3 hours and even though I sent in reservation at about 10-11am EST, it was confirmed within hours, given the time difference I was immediately impressed. After that Candice provided great information about the area and where to eat and even left my wife a nice jar of local honey (I had told her we were going to hi for my her birthday).
The location is very quiet as it is off the beaten path, the cottage was immaculate, and the grounds were beautiful We spent three nights here as a base for exploring Volcano National Park and the surroundings; there was a booklet of things to do and places to eat that took the mystery out of an unknown town, very helpful.
The only regret is that we got flew into Kona in the afternoon and got to the house so late we didn't get the opportunity to meet Candice or Richard. Though they were immediately available by phone when I had a bit of hard time finding the right home in the dark.
If/when we revisit this area, I would definitely stay again.
Thanks for the great accomodations and helpful hints!

We so enjoyed our stay at Volcano Mountain Haven. It is close to the National Park, a focal point of our trip for hiking and birding. The grounds are full of flowers and ohia trees, which are full of apapane and other native birds.
We appreciated the well-stocked kitchen, the owner's guidebooks and nature guidebooks, the hike and dinner recommendations, which we followed.
It is such a beautiful house in a perfect setting, we plan to return soon.
“A gorgeous jewel of a cottage, in a peaceful and breathtaking se”

We spent three nights at the Volcano Mountain Haven in November, 2013. Our hosts had told us before we arrived how to access the lockbox key, which was no problem, but they took the extra step of informing a friendly nearby neighbor, who was there to help when we arrived. The Volcano Mountain Haven is indeed cozy, but fully-equipped in every respect, with a furnished kitchen stocked with the basics and more. The bedroom was very comfortable, clean, and (in the cool nighttime) easy to warm up with the electric fireplace. Everything was spotlessly clean and we felt very welcomed with the Spiegels' comprehensive binder full of instructions and recommendations left by the kitchen table along with some delicious chocolate-covered macadamia nuts. The cottage is surrounded by a beautiful garden filled with flowers, tree-ferns, a small personal sculpture or two, and more. The water supply (like most in residential Volcano village) is based on a catchment system, but the catchment itself was not an intrusive feature in the yard/garden. A picture-window overlooking the garden, with outdoor lighting, allowed us a completely serene view of the lovely setting even at night. Proximity to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park meant that we could fill our days with adventurous hikes and tours, but easily find the services we needed (restaurants, stores, post-office, etc.) nearby, without a lot of time wasted in highway traveling. We would very happily return to the Volcano Mountain Haven anytime, and recommend it wholeheartedly to all. The Spiegels are wonderful and thoughtful hosts, and we felt their care and support in all our moments in their beautiful Volcano Mountain Haven. It completely embodies the spirit of "aloha."
