About Morro Bay

Take a break in the waterfront city of Morro Bay. It’s an idyllic destination for vacationers looking to escape their busy lives, relax and enjoy picture perfect views of the ocean.

Start planning this trip and book your Morro Bay vacation rental on FlipKey—there really is no place better to stay.

About Morro Bay, California

Thousands of years ago, the Chumash people settled at the mouth of Morro Creek. Little did they know that the area would turn into one of the most popular tourist spots in California.

It gets its name from the 576-foot-high volcanic plug that sits on the entrance to the harbor. Spanish explorers called it a 'morro' for its bluish tinge, and since then the name stuck.

You can go out to the rock itself and have a look round, though climbing on it is prohibited.

Tourists looking for a beach escape love this place. It has idyllic sandy beaches and a cool, Mediterranean climate. Not too hot, not too cold, and it very rarely rains outside of the damp season (November to April).

Pick Morro Bay as your next vacation destination. You won’t be disappointed.

What to do

While you're here, you should hit the beach. Most people head for the north side of Morro Rock, but here's a local secret—the south side is less busy and just as nice! Go there for a peaceful beach vacation.

If you're a fan of fishing, you won't be disappointed. There's halibut, rockfish, sole and albacore for you to catch. Of course, this means there are lots of seafood restaurants about—make sure to try one! The oysters are grown in the shallow bay, so they're fresh too.

Why not stroll around the harbor? It's only for small boats, but some of them are stunning. If you're feeling adventurous, why not charter one? Make sure you get someone to captain it though—only experts should sail on these waters!

For a bit of culture, go to the Museum of Natural History. And, for a bit of fun, visit the Morro Bay Skateboard Museum. It's always a hit with the kids.

Top travel tips

Take this chance to try kayaking and canoeing on the water. It's a great spot to learn, and there are plenty of schools around. Ask the visitors’ center where to go—they might even be able to get you a discount.

Explore the area on foot or by car. There's lots to see—you just have to start looking.

For a peaceful beach location, head to Morro Bay. Far away from the hustle and bustle of other beaches teeming with tourists, you and your travel companions will have a spectacular time.

Start by booking your Morro Bay vacation rental on FlipKey and see where the adventure takes you.
