Description

Casa Kalana is a unique, quiet, private home nestled in the last section of tropical dry forest just 250 yards to the Pacific Ocean. You can pour yourself a cup of coffee and put your feet in the ocean before it gets cold. We have an abundance of wildlife to observe thanks to our heavily wooded property. We have a fully appointed kitchen, granite counter and bar, dining and living area which opens onto the outdoor terrace, complete with hammocks, where our guests tend to spend the majority of their time. Getting around

A rental car is highly recommended if you are here for more than one week. Bicycle rentals can be organized for exploring the area as well. Bus travel is daily into Santa Cruz, but with a rental car, you can be there and back with your shopping by the time the bus arrives in Santa Cruz, a real time saver when you are on vacation. Most of the area restaurants and stores are within a 10 minute walking distance, but carrying groceries back home can be a bit daunting for the uninitiated. Local taxi service is also available. Let us know about your plans and desires before you arrive so you minimize any downtime.

Interaction with guest

Guests let me know how much interaction they need, but I am not more than 10 minutes away should anything arise. It is the jungle here, and things do happen, mostly nature. We are long time residents here and have enjoyed hosting guests who have left as friends. We work hard to insure your valuable vacation time is stress free and relaxing and we are honored that you would consider Casa Kalana and Playa Negra. If you have any questions, please let me know how to be of service. Mahalo, Frank Kalana

Response from the owner Aloha Don! Thank you for the kind words and review! You were the first person to stay in the house since the burglary. You are a repeat guest and a resident of CR, so you know that no house in CR is guaranteed safe. Response from the owner Dear Host Family, The safety and security of our guests is our main focus here at Casa Kalana. As the owner, I am deeply sorry that you have experienced this loss and invasion of privacy while guests here at my home. All of our guests, including you, are informed upon check-in of the importance of following personal safety to prevent any material loss or break-ins. They are also made aware that the area is subject to break-ins and it is necessary to be vigilant. We have developed a simple and effective way to minimize the chances of this occurring as follows: • Please ensure all doors and windows are locked prior to leaving the house. • Please notify me if you are going to be gone from the house for more than 1 hour. I stay around the house constantly if you are going to be away. • Please utilize the safety security box for storage of any and all valuables. There were two lapses of our security protocol that led to the burglary: 1) The door lock was broken, requiring a new key. Rather than wait for the new key, the house was left unlocked, as well as unattended. 2) Valuables that should have been stored in the safety security box were left out. These two simple acts literally left an “open door” for the bad guys. We have had over 100 groups stay at Casa Kalana with excellent experiences, for which we are grateful. For our future guests, please remember to leave your valuables at home, don’t take anything to the beach that you would be sad to lose. We respectfully counsel all our guests to follow our security protocols and keep me informed of your comings and goings. Join the group of people who have had positive experiences in Playa Negra and Casa Kalana. Aloha!

Response from the owner Aloha Sam and Mahalo nui loa for the review and kind words! We work hard to keep this place "real" and to hear that you experienced that is very rewarding! For sure having a car greatly extends your ability to see the surrounding area beyond what you can access by foot, which is still pretty amazing in itself. Great tip for future travelers is to bring a headlamp or flashlight as nights can be darker than most people have ever seen, zero light pollution out here! I can't wait to see you both again and spend some time turtle hunting together! See you soon!
