“The Hippie Hut” We loved this place! Nicely tucked in on main street and amazingly quiet for the location. Short walk to town square, which is really fun and full for great food and coffee and shops. The bed is very comfortable. The retro living room and kitchen work well and are fun!

“Magical Garden in the Mist” Without a doubt, this was the most lovely experience we have ever had! We relaxed amidst the idyllic garden setting, lounged within the warmth of the gorgeous wood of the cabin walls, and thoroughly enjoyed watching the fog stop at the end of the driveway and lightly wisp far above our heads as though we were in a special place continually blessed by sunshine during the day and myriad stars at night. The pond provided a meditative spot beyond compare where we could watch the lotus flowers open throughout the day and occasionally get a visit from the charming, yet somewhat shy koi fish, whom we named "Oscar." The sounds of the surf from across the road and the glorious quietness of the property was medicine for our souls. Dining in the sunroom brightened our days right from the start and warmed our hearts in the evening. The property manager greeted us on our arrival and gave us a very thorough tour of the property. She was readily available during the week of our stay if we had any questions and offered us valuable information about the surrounding community. The town of Trinidad is a tiny, charming fishing village. The dining choices are limited, but decent, save for Moonstone Grill which belies its name by offering four-star food and service overlooking the Pacific Ocean and provided us with a supremely romantic dining experience on par with those we can experience in the Sonoma Wine Country where we live. When we chose to cook our own meals at the cabin, the kitchen was outfitted with more than ample space, utensils, cooking tools, and a glorious gas range that I found to be a joy to cook on. We felt as though we had truly found our own private heaven in this secluded Garden of Eden. The bath upstairs in the loft has a superb jacuzzi tub that can easily soothe the soul as well as the body. The walk-in closet seems like an entire room in itself. The bed was divinely comfortable and the loft lit up with the morning light, welcoming us to each day.

About Arcata

Arcata, California

It may be one of the most eco-friendly and progressive towns around, but there’s more to Arcata than its hippie culture and vegetarian restaurants.

Book your vacation rental with FlipKey and come to discover what this hidden California gem has to offer for yourself.

About Arcata

Arcata was founded in 1850, to provide a base for those working in the nearby lumber camps. Today it’s better known for its progressive politics and green credentials, with bike lanes on almost every street and tandem bicycles collecting residents’ recycling. Home to Humboldt State University, the town has a laidback vibe and unique culture, plus plenty of green spaces and outdoor activities to keep even the most active types happy.

If you’re into clean eating and vegetarian cuisine, Arcata’s cafes and restaurants will prove a delight, with no shortage of smoothie and juice bars to choose from. There are other options too, from Mexican food trucks to cozy coffee shops and restaurants serving the freshest oysters and seafood. Don’t miss the annual Oyster Festival which takes place every June at the Central Plaza, a great spot for people watching.

What to do

Get outdoors and enjoy the countryside—there’s plenty of it nearby. Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary has five miles of trails and is a popular spot for birdwatching. Or drive 45 minutes north to Redwood National and State Parks where you can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, kayaking and canoeing—or just relax in the sunshine with a family picnic.

It’s less than a 10-minute drive to some great family-friendly beaches where you can work on your tan or give surfing or skim boarding a go. Or rent a bike in the town center and explore on two wheels—there are bike lanes crisscrossing the town, making it easy to get from A to B.

From spring to fall, the Central Plaza hosts an organic farmers’ market on Saturday mornings, an opportunity to shop for local produce—it’s also a good place to relax in the sunshine.

Top travel tips

The nearest airport for domestic flights is Arcata/Eureka Airport in McKinleyville, just 6 miles to the north of town. For international flights, you’ll need to drive some 292 miles to San Francisco International.

Center Arts hosts regular events and has attracted names like Lou Reed in the past. Those in the know pick up tickets in the HSY Bookstore on the third floor of the University Center.

Dry season here runs from June to September, although there can be foggy days during the summer months, and it can get cool at times, so layer up if you’re going hiking!

For a relaxing vacation in a small, friendly town with plenty of activities for all ages, Arcata is the perfect destination.

FlipKey has dozens of rentals to choose from, whether you prefer a cozy log cabin or modern downtown digs. Browse our range of accommodation today.

Sweet Home Stay Dog-Friendly 2 BD/1 BA Fenced Yard Bungalow Near Plaza & HSU
Lovely hideaway

The cottage was lovely and beautifully appointed. Our kids and dog enjoyed the fenced yard, and the bed was super comfy. The proximity to Wildberries Market and downtown was great as well. The cottage felt very private, though there was some residual noise from the street at times. We would definitely stay here again!see more
Arcata Rose Court Cottage in Serene Garden Setting Midtown Cozy Studio
cottage elegance on the coast of Humbolt county

A flower bordered walkway ushered us into the Rose Cottage. Tastefully appointed , the guest house was cozy and comfortable. Christy created a breakfast that more than complimented our vegetarian desires. The furniture was comfortable for my wife and I as was the queen size bed. The cottage has a good selection of reading material and local history. We did not avail ourselves of the tv and dvd player choosing instead to relax quietly . I would recommend this B+B to any couple .see more
