“The perfect home base from which to see all of Ireland” This is a lovely property ideally located with easy access to the motorways that will take you to every part of the country. The home is beautifully appointed and maintained! We spent the majority of our holiday taking day trips so did not take full advantage of the home's many ammenities such as a full kitchen and working fireplaces. The owner was extremely attentive and accommodating and we thoroughly enjoyed being greeted on a daily basis by the dogs that live on the farm!

The Cottage
Large Cottage in the heart of it all, nearly perfect, but....

REVIEW OF THE COTTAGE We were a family of 4- 2 grandparents and 2 grandchildren ages 16 and 14. We booked the cottage for 2 weeks, a year prior to our travel dates. We were enchanted by the photos that we saw and the majority of the reviews I read were favorable. The price we paid was unbelievably low, we felt, for a 2 week stay in the heart of Ireland. Maeve, the owner of the cottage, was in touch by email right away after we booked, and offered any help or advice we might need in making our plans. The location is perfect, a very short 3-5 minute ride to the cute town of Ballymahon where we found the SuperSave Market and the Daybreak market which served our grocery shopping needs very well. Also we were only about 1.5 - 3.5 hours from most of the major cities, i.e Dublin, Belfast, Galway, Cork and everything in between. Perfect! The cottage is very large. In fact there is one room we never used at all- the tv room. For some reason we could only get black and white pictures on the tv- maybe something was connected wrong? Not sure, but it was actually nice to stay off of a tv during Our stay. Our favorite place to hang out when we were home was the Sun Room off the kitchen. We spent many hours in the evenings playing games there. We were blessed with beautiful sunny weather and cool temperatures for most of our holiday. We simply dressed in layers each day and removed sweaters and jackets as needed. It was a refreshing change from our hot, Florida weather! The yard is large with beautiful views of the countryside and plenty of room for children to run and play. There are some areas that do need attention and TLC, however, which will be addressed as you read. Upon arrival we found the keys just as Maeve had told me we would in an email she sent after our final payment had been made. After about 5 minutes of trying to open the front door I called Maeve and she explained the right combination for using the keys. A note in the key box would have been helpful. There is no doorknob on the front door, so when leaving you have to grasp the frame around the window and try to pull the door closed. Cleanliness is an issue. We found a sandwich press and were going to use it, however it had leftover makings from the previous renters. I took it upon myself to clean it the morning we left. Even though we had not used it, I didn't want anyone thinking we had left it that way. The coffee pot, which we also tried to use, had residual water and slime in it. Even after cleaning the coffee pot myself it still had grime in it. It should be thrown out, it looks unsalvageable. We killed no less than 10 large spiders the first couple of days- mostly in the upstairs bedrooms and saw at least 1 every day after that. There are cobwebs and spider webs throughout the house. The two faucets in the kitchen are a challenge. The hot water faucet dispenses scalding water and the cold water faucet is so tight it is very difficult to turn on We used a towel to help grip the faucet knob and that helped. The window shade over the glass doors leading to the back yard is broken. If you pull it down you will need to wind it back up by hand as the cord to do so is broken. In order to use the appliances- stove, oven or microwave- you need to turn on the wall switches above the dishwasher- maybe this is typical in Ireland? Not sure. The stove burners did not work properly much of the time. They would go off and on at random. The shower in the master bathroom has peeling paint on the ceiling and black stains around the tiles. The faucets in that sink are right up against the sink, making getting your hands under there to wash them quite a challenge, not impossible, just challenging. We were only given 4 large towels for 4 people for 2 weeks, and I believe 2 little hand towels. No bath mats, making getting out of a shower onto a wooden floor with soapy feet (because water stands in the master bedroom shower) quite dangerous. Maeve did suggest in an email that we bring extra towels from home but when traveling across the ocean for a 2 week holiday, adding towels would take up much valuable space in the luggage so we did not and hoped for the best. Heat- you are allotted 2 hours of heat per day. Should it be cold and you require more you can purchase it for 2.50 euros per needed hour. We were fortunate in that we really only needed heat for a few of our days there. Maeve turns the heat on and off remotely. This requires you to be in constant contact with her to let her know when you will be in the cottage and need the allotted heat. The heaters are the old fashioned iron ones in each room. Very quaint and authentic, but it takes them a good while to heat up when they are turned on, which takes away from your allotted 2 hours per day. There is a small washing machine but no dryer. The clothesline in the back yard has a few clothespins for your use, a pole in the center would be nice to keep clothes from hanging on the ground. There is peeling paint around all the Windows and doors, not safe if you have little ones that might peel the paint and put it in their mouth. Beds- the bed in the master bedroom is double size and not very comfortable. Very thin mattress. The sheets look dingy and old, pillows are stained. My grandchildren opted to share the twin room. They said their beds were very comfortable. The toilet in the master bath takes a full 5 minutes to refill after a flush. There is a stone "fountain" in the back yard. It only runs if you turn the switch on in the laundry room. Because water sits there all the time it really is just a big mosquito breeder. Mosquitos came out in droves each evening at dusk. Internet- none. Wi-Fi...none. That was actually not a big problem as with Verizon we did have pretty good connection most days. We purchased their $10 per day travel pass which gave us unlimited talk and text plus whatever data plan you have with them. I realize some of these issues are minor, but I feel that prospective renters should be aware of what to expect upon arrival. Also, I say all of this as a help to the owner. With just a little TLC, perhaps a new cleaning company and consideration for your guests comfort, The Cottage at Ballymahon could be perfect. I fully believe that had we let Maeve know of our issues she would have done her best to address them while we were there, however we did not want a cleaning crew in there during our holiday. Maeve is very gracious and helpful, although I reached out to her by e-mail once we arrived home and sent her a copy of what I was planning to submit as my review. I was hoping for a logical explanation for some of the issues described here. She has not responded to my 2 e-mails to date. The 4 of us (our grandchildren, husband and myself) sat around talking about how we could make it a perfect vacation rental! The detached garage, which appears to be a storehouse, could possibly be turned into a bunkhouse/game room for larger families. With just some deep cleaning, de-spidering, painting and maintenance, this place would be amazing! We all agree that overall our time at the Cottage in Ballymahon was wonderful. I would recommend it, (in fact I HAVE recommended it to friends with the disclaimers mentioned here), especially if the maintenance issues are addressed and taken care of.see more
