FEAGOUR, family friendly, country holiday cottage, with a garden in Laggan, Ref
Kinlochlaggan house
- 2 bedrooms
- 1 bathroom
- sleeps 4
“Very good cottage, once you can find it” Feagour cottage is, as advertised, tucked away in a lovely secluded forest location. And that is its only problem: finding it! The owner's directions simply state turn left 3.5 miles from the a road junction: there's no helpful sign at the start of this anonymous forest access road, only those for Balfour-Beatty! Sykes helpfully give you a postcode centred on Kinlochlaggan, a few miles away and even more helpfully a grid reference for the postcode centre, not the cottage: what use is that? (And it's still incorrect on their site, despite feedback!!) For reference, the cottage is actually located at Nn571903 and smack bang on the east-west watershed. Once you track it down (only took a phone call, 30 min or so and 10 miles of extra driving...) it's a clean, cosy, quite spacious place, with a well-equipped kitchen, even if somewhat idiosyncratically. Between the heated porch/mudroom and superheated bathroom (underfloor) we found it great as a base for wintry walks on Speyside, as there was no trouble in drying our hiking gear overnight. Indeed, you can do 2 waymarked walks right from the door, one to the fascinating Pictish fort on the hill opposite and the other to an abandoned village site. For shopping we found the new Co-op in Newtonmore, 14 miles away on the route to aviemore, to be a good bet. Unsurprisingly, the little convenience store in Laggan is pricey in comparison. So in summary: best bits- warm, cosy and quiet; worst bit- finding it (but you only have to do that once!)

“Wow! What a view!” This was a relatively last minute booking and represented good value for money. Katchana is in a beautfiul setting; close to centres of activity like aviemore (approx 9 miles) but not too far (in Scottish terms) from Inverness and tourist 'attractions' like Loch Ness, Glencoe, Ben Nevis etc. The property itself felt extremely spacious for 2 adults and a 3 year old and I would imagine that an extra child / adult would still give a feeling of space and not the sense that one is living on top of each other. That said, the bedrooms are quite small. However, the living areas (kitchen diner, dining area and living room) are, in contrast, vast and perfect for relaxing. I agree with one of the other reviews - there are a few areas in the property that aren't as inviting (the 'enclosed balcony' at the end of the lounge / utility space) - this is mainly because they look like they could do with a bit of a tidy up and appear to be an 'afterthought'. Katchana is situated in an breathtakingly beautiful location with oodles of land / view points around it (particularly if you interested in wildlife). It could be made an extremely luxurious property if a little more attention was paid to small details. (eg. replacing light bulbs, better ambient lighting, few more kitchen utensils, better tourist information booklets etc). They're only little things and on balance we absolutely loved our time here.

“Very relaxing holiday” A lovely comfortable cottage and a nice welcome from the owner with homemade cake. Cottage could not be better. Very clean and comfortable with great views. Only suggestion I would make would be that a tumble dryer would be useful for winter stays.

CREAG-NA-SANAIS, family friendly, country holiday cottage, with a garden in
South Laggan house
- 2 bedrooms

“peaceful and yet fantastic to be outdoors and enjoy the spectacu” Staying at the Creag-Na-Sanais was a great choice. Peaceful , fantastic scenery and really family friendly. The cottage is kitted out with everything you need. The family who own it made us feel really welcome, but also left us to enjoy our holiday. Our little boy loved seeing and hearing the cows and sheep on their farm everyday. You cant just pop out to a shop, there's a fair bit of driving involved in the highlands but that's the beauty of the Scottish Highlands and around the Cairngorms. The roads are great. There is a fantastic remoteness up in the highlands , we did travel around to lots of different places and did a lot of driving. But it suits us as a family to explore and have that freedom to do so. We love Scotland. Coming from a beautiful part of the country already - cornwall, its a totally different feel and well worth visiting.

INSHCRAIG, family friendly, country holiday cottage, with a garden in Kincraig
Kincraig house
- 3 bedrooms

“Lovely Place, Highly Recommended” The spotless, cosy and roomy accommodation was ideal for our family of two adults and two teenage boys. We enjoy the outdoors and the location of the property was ideal for this. Good mountain biking routes set off from the cottage and several Munros and smaller hills were easily accessible from the cottage. If you want peace and space to explore the cottage is ideal, and even has a large porch for muddy wet gear. Anyone looking for lively attractions visitor's centres, nightlife and entertainment would be disappointed though. Aviemore, with its supermarket, pubs restaurants, clay pigeon shooting and other outdoor pursuits is only a few miles away.

“Thouroughly enjoyable,” As we traveled with 3 adults it was very good to have an ensuite bathroom plus the main bathroom. The cottage was well situated for exploring further north to aviemore and south to Pitlochry. Alocal hotel was nearby to have great meals at night

“A relaxed escape to the country” If you have never been to Loch Ness and the surrounding areas, Alex & Janet's little hideaway is absolutely perfect as a base. No detail was overlooked: directions, Welcome pack of biscuits & chocolates which our kids loved, Separated packs of information with walks and local interests, even dog treats they understand hospitality to the letter. A home from home you only need to bring some food or pop to Tesco/Asda which was a reasonable 20miles ish at Inverness. The location was perfect we were within reach of Inverness, Fort agustus and the Fall of Foyers, which was our primary visit, and on a clear night which we were lucky to have one the night sky is something to see. If you are a family looking for walks we found that the forestry commission walks were best as they were marked out by difficulty and colour coded posts throughout the chosen walk (avoids embarrassing moments of getting lost). For us it was a break to escape the typical 'busy' life and a chance to reconnect with each other as a family with some board games (take some) and country air.
