"Lovely cabin, awesome experience !!!"

Left on 07/12/2017 for a stay in June 2017
Lost Bison Cabin is in amazing location, step away from hiking opportunities and surrounded by nature. The inside is equipped with all necessary amenities which were up to date, and the cozy finish with themed Bison throughout the cabin. The owners were friendly and easy to contact with any concerns. Wonderful time in an amazing cabin.

"Our Custer Cabin"

Left on 07/08/2017 for a stay in July 2017
My husband and I have been to Custer several times over the last 20 years, always camping either with the horses or ATVs. This year we decided it was time to take the grandkids but knew it would be hard to camp with the 6 of us, so I started my quest for a place to stay that would accommodate our needs. I found this cabin and booked it in January of this year. Our reservations were from July 1-7. We arrived on Saturday the 7th and were pleasantly surprised, since I've never had incredible satisfaction trying to book things online, it always seems like they only publish the couple best pictures. Well that wasn't the case here, this place was exactly what was pictured and actually even better than we hopped for! It had nice size chain link fenced dog area accessible from the laundry room as well as a really nice fenced area to bring horses. I was a little bummed I didn't bring mine with, maybe next time. It was spacious, clean and cozy and was really well stocked. My husbands only suggestion was BBQ utensils. I loved the large kitchen, and having the washer and dryer was a life saver, they were itemized almost every day with us doing lots of off road trail riding. The master bedroom was very nice size and boasted a very large super comedy king bed. We were a little concerned at first that there wasn't a separate AC unit in the Master bedroom since it would get quite warm during the day, but with the ceiling fan,the patio door and two windows open in the evening, it always cooled down quite nicely to being a little chilly in the early morning. All in all, we loved the cabin, the location the view and the amenities. We would highly recommend this place for on the go families with a couple small dogs like were were. Btw, the kids loved climbing the huge rock cropping right in the back yard.

"Picture perfect"

Left on 07/05/2017 for a stay in July 2017
House is great! Perfect for our family. You are a few minutes from Jewel Cave, minutes from Custer City and so much to do. We come back each night to this quiet home away from everything, but there is still Wifi and Netflix . Owner is helpful and the house is ready for you to make it your home away from home

"Totally Awesome"

Left on 07/27/2017 for a stay in July 2017
We stayed July 22- 26, 2017. The house is down a gravel road. You might have to wait for the local bison herd to move off the road. But it is Totally Awesome. It is nestled in the trees. Plenty of space for 5 people. Every morning there were two does and two fawns in the yard. It is close to Custer State park, Jewel National cave, Mt Rushmore and so much more. Kaileen was very easy to talk to when the internet and netflix would not work for us. Our kids loved eating outside on the deck for breakfast and at the picnic tables for lunch and supper. Would stay next time we visit South Dakota.

"Vacation rental"

This was a beautiful home.. pictures were accurate.. only issue was the check in with the rental agency.. trouble teaching them for three correct entry code.. but as for everything else.. went smooth..

About Custer

Surrounded by windswept plains and badlands full of steep-sided canyons and rugged spires, Custer, South Dakota, is the ideal base for a Black Hills vacation. To find your perfect rental property, start searching here on FlipKey where you’ll discover accommodation to fit all budgets and taste.

About Custer

Home to indigenous peoples for thousands of years, the Black Hills belonged to the Oglala Sioux before European settlers arrived following the discovery of gold in 1874.

After confrontations between the Sioux and the settlers, the US government forced the Native Americans to give up land to create the town of Stonewall, named after the Confederate General Stonewall Jackson. Later, the town changed its name to Custer after the 7th Cavalry General.

Today, Custer has a population of just over 2,000 and while the local economy is still based on mining and lumber, tourism is beginning to play a bigger part in the town’s future.

Located near the Badlands’ biggest attractions, such as the Crazy Horse Memorial and Mount Rushmore, staying in Custer means less time driving and more time enjoying South Dakota.

What to do in Custer

Just two minutes from town and you are in Custer State Park, a 71,000-acre natural wonderland of towering peaks and cool mountain lakes where 1,300 buffalo roam free.

Besides being able to get up close with the animals, Custer State Park offers world-class rock climbing and hiking trails that include one to the summit of Black Elk Peak—the highest mountain east of the Rockies at 7,242 feet. Visitors to the Park also enjoy swimming, fishing, horseback riding, and dinners served out of the back of a chuckwagon.

Just 25 minutes north of Custer is Mount Rushmore, an American monument that hosts over 3 million visitors a year. Originally designed as an attraction to bring more visitors to the Black Hills, sculptor Gutzon Borglum was commissioned to carve the faces of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln into the rock face of a mountain.

Top travel tips for Custer

Picking the perfect time of year to visit Custer and the Black Hills can be difficult given the fact snow can fall any time of year at the higher elevations.

In the summer the temperature rarely gets above 90°F and in the winter above 10°F. June until September is the optimal time of year to visit and take advantage of all the outdoor activities on offer.

You definitely need a car if you want to make the most of your time in South Dakota. With so much natural beauty and the chance to learn about the history of the area, the town of Custer is ideally positioned for any Badlands vacation.
