Makaha apartment

“Fantastic Holiday” We stayed at the condo in the Makaha Plantation and found the staff excellent and so friendly. The grounds were beautiful. The swimming pools were very nice but busy with families as we were there over the Labor Day weekend and the whole island was busy but we loved seeing all the locals enjoying the weekend with their families. The condo had two bedrooms and my 11 and 13 year old sons slept very comfortably in the second bedroom. They each had their own bed. We found the rooms very clean. The bathroom was as well very nice. The fridge had staple items in it and so dont buy groceries until you check the unit- as the cupboard shelves had staples as well. Bottom line the condo had alot of things in it that we used each day- tin foil for the bbq's outside on the grounds. Sandwich bags were there so that we could pack a lunch. We could even use the cooler in the entry way cupboard to take a picnic anywhere. There are beach towels so dont bring towels. The boogie boards are not in good shape that are in the closet but if you want to learn to surf there is a flyer on the side table in the unit - call danny Boro and he teaches surfing at a local Army beach called rest Camp. When we came back to the unit we felt like we were coming home. We cooked our meals each evening minus a couple of evenings. We made lunches each day to take with us and our breakfast was a very easy one- hanging out at the condo before we got going for the day. Check the freezer for coffee. There is a fully functional coffee put, stove and microwave. Yes there is a commute to some of the items that you want to see while you are on the island of Oahu - example Diamond Head is about an hours drive down when there is no traffic but at the end of the day in traffic (there is traffic) you will be driving 1.5 hours. We did alot of the places to see on the island and still it did not bother us to be staying where we were staying - because it was peaceful and quiet and the local beaches were beautiful. We had our own parking space that we was right in front of the condo. The local grocery store Tamura's was very good and the people again were so friendly. We as well well ate at Rest Camp on Army road where our boys learned to surf. We watched the most beautiful sunsets while sipping on our drinks. Once again the locals were so kind and friendly. There was as well local spot for breakfast on the same side as Tamura's that had great macademian pancakes - called I think Harrara's. Ask one of the locals at the grocery to direct you. They will be happy to. We did waikiki Beach twice but we loved the less touristy quieter location of the condo at Makaha Plantation. It was lovely!!

Oceanfront 3 - 5 BR / 2 - 3.5 BA House

Makaha house

“Nice place to stay....” Our stay on Oahu was nice and the Makaha property was clean and as described. The homeowner was very receptive to our questions and provided a wealth of information on what to do and where to go via an email prior to our arrival. The caretaker, Lia, was very nice and informative as well. The house itself was well stocked with basic necessities and we found the home to be comfortable. The decor is a bit tired and could use some updating. New towels and bedding would add a lot to the overall feel of a better stay. A place to put the outdoor furniture cushions during the rainstorms would be nice as well as it rained every day and once it stopped there was no dry cushion to sit on outside. With that said, the property was adequate for the price and we did enjoy our stay. The beach access, 5 houses away, was an easy walk and we enjoyed the turtles that did decide to come onto the beach to sunbathe for part of the day. This is a small beach, with rocks on either side, making it difficult to boogie board for the big kids, but perfect for the little kids that are wave-jumpers in the winter months. During our week stay the weather was not great, with frequent rain storms, high winds, and red flags on the beaches. We found ourselves driving south towards Waikiki most days to snorkel and enjoy the calmer beaches and see the sites of Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, and the east side of the island. Makaha is not a tourist area, but we did find a great beach, more to the north, called Yokohama (I think), the last day of our trip. We were also told that Electric Beach, (the beach directly in front of the power plant on the main road), is a great place to snorkel, but given the weather conditions we never stopped. Overall, we would recommend this property to others that are looking for a more affordable place to stay on the island.

“Demanding Customer” As a demanding business owner of a Housecleaning Service in the North East, I not only give the best service to keep my clients satisfied I also expect the best as a customer. The best for me (in this case) was to encounter a clean (to my standards), neat, and safe place to stay. I literally booked it one day before my arrival; the owner and management worked with me immediately, were very polite and made it very easy to make my stay possible. I honestly wasn't expecting much because of my lack of time in research. However, I was told this condo was the best kept in the building. They were right! I was very pleased; it was fully equipped with everything I needed (laundry, kitchenware - pots, toaster, coffee maker, extra towels, bedding, cleaning supplies, beach equipment, etc.). Also, private parking was convenient, and the location worked well since my husband is from the west side of the island. We stayed for almost 2 weeks and will definitely book again! Have in mind the place isn't luxurious, it will need some updates soon, but it is well kept, neat/organized, and clean!

“Hidden Jewel West Side” This is the perfect area to go to get out of busy Waikiki but is well within driving distance. It is a quiet country setting with only the noises of the birds and peacocks. The mountain breezes are cool and refreshing and the views beautiful. The condo was well kept and spacious. The owner was easy to work with and addressed any questions or issues that came up. There are two pools on property and the community is gated and has very good security. It was perfect for us to get away from the New England winter and we stayed there from Feb. 1, 2012 til May 19,2012.

About Makaha, Hawaii

Makaha lies on Oahu's west shore, not too far from Honolulu.

The name translates as 'fierce' or 'savage' in native Hawaiian, but it is far from it. The idyllic beaches and clear blue waters make it the perfect backdrop for a peaceful vacation.

‘Makaha’ actually comes from an old story. Bandits based in the valley waited for people to pass by before robbing them. Luckily for us, this stopped years ago. All the locals today are friendly and welcoming!

Traditional Hawaiian life is important to the people of Makaha, and they often host traditional events. See if you can catch one during your stay as it's a great opportunity to learn about the area.

Despite being a small town with only a few small restaurants and convenience stores, Makaha is known all over the world for being one of the best surfing locations.

Many international surfing contests are held here because of the massive waves – some even rise up to 45-feet tall!

What to do

First things first, when you visit Makaha, you have to hit the beach. Makaha Beach Park is a great spot for vacationers and has almost everything you could possibly need.

Learn to surf with one of the local schools. If that’s not for you, try something else, like canoe-surfing or tandem surfing! Go diving between the arches and ledges in Makaha Caverns and explore these natural caves.

If you're looking for something a little calmer, the beach is wide so it's also great for swimming and sunbathing. We suggest setting up in the center of the beach as there's no reef and the waves are calm – perfect for families.

To find out a little more about the local culture, visit the Kan Aki Heiau – an ancient Hawaiian temple. There's always someone around to tell you about it. But remember it's only open between Tuesdays and Sundays.

Top Makaha, Hawaii travel tips

There's no need for a car in Makaha. You can walk pretty much everywhere. To get here, use public transport – the Express City Bus C is best as it takes you along the coast and is the most direct route.

While on the beach, watch out for sea turtle nests – you wouldn't want to accidentally step on one!

Also, if you're not a confident swimmer, stay out of the water when the surf is up. There are lifeguards on the beaches, but it's best to stay safe during your stay.

For a trip to a Hawaiian paradise, choose Makaha. This quaint small town is perfect for those looking to escape from their busy everyday lives and soak up some sun.
