About Cody, Wyoming
Found in northwest Wyoming, Cody is still heavily influenced by the cowboy days of yesteryear.
Rodeos are an important part of the town calendar—it's even been nicknamed the rodeo capital of the world! If you come in the summer, be sure to check one out.
The town itself is named after Colonel William Frederick Cody—perhaps better known as 'Buffalo Bill'. He helped found the original town and is, perhaps, the most famous cowboy (apart from John Wayne, of course).
Though Bill hunted bison, not buffalo, there's no denying the influence he had on this town. See what you can discover about its past during your stay here.
However, there's much more to Cody than it's past—it's also an area of natural beauty. As you drive into town, you'll see the Shoshone River flowing through a deep canyon. And, the surrounding forests edge things off nicely.
What to do
Go to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, where you'll find out all about—you guessed it—Buffalo Bill! But, don't worry, there are other museums too.
There’s the Draper Natural History Museum, the Plains Indians Museum, Cody Firearms Museum and Whitney Western Art museum at the same complex, but you may want to take a couple of days to do them all.
Visit Old Trail Town to find out more about the area's history—it's an accurate restoration of over 25 historic Western buildings and is great fun to explore!
Not too far away lies Yellowstone National Park—the world's first national park. Watch the water spout out of Old Faithful and other geysers. And, see if you can spot any of the locals—grizzlies, wolves and elk are all known to roam these parts.
Cody isn't only good in the summer. The winter has lots to offer too. Go on snowmobile tours, ice skate in Homesteader Park, try your hand at ice climbing or head further up the mountain for skiing.
