“Excellent quiet get away, near a beautiful park!” My boyfriend and I stayed here in early October as a get away from our busy lives as medical residents, and we couldnt have been happier with our choice! Julie is an excellent owner, she sent us intricate directions, made us feel very welcome, gave many recommendations for restaurants and hikes, and was available to help out in any way (when we arrived we had some difficulty entering the house, but we called Julie and someone came over immediately and let us in, no problem). The house is spacious and comfortable, with a back porch for grilling, a fully stocked kitchen, and comfy beds and chairs. We really felt at home. And of course, Acadia is beautiful! There were lots of guide books in the cottage for our perusal, as well as recommendations from Julie. We got to see more of the West side of the island by staying here, and it was still relatively easy to access the main park (~ 30 min drive to some parts of the island). Overall, it was nice to stay somewhere more out of the way for a very fun and relaxing getaway!

“Great location, beautiful view, cosy place” We visited for a week with our kids (9, 12 years) in July, I can only support my Co-reviewers: a most beautiful location, the sea at your feet, a spectacular sight with sunsets and rocks for kids to climb, with love, taste and insight prepared surroundings (find a bench/picknic table at the places you like to sit), a cosy, clean place, with all you need to feel comfortable, kind people meeting your needs/wishes whereever possible, lots of interesting things to do (hikes, biking, whale watching) in close distance.

“More than a vacation destination!” I'm a nature lover so I was not upset that it was pouring rain when we arrived because the brief rain brought a beautiful gift---the loons drifting out of the mist on Walker Pond. You don't have to be a nature lover to enjoy your stay at Cathy and Dan's incredible house on the lake. My husband and I were guests of our daughter's mother-in-law, and we were prepared to be delighted because she had been coming up to Kill Kare Kamp for a few years and we had heard how much she loved it. The house is cozy, spacious and comfortable with a spectacular view of the "pond" from the wraparound veranda. You can also take a trip back in time when you peruse the family photos on the walls or by reading the story of the camp in a book lovingly kept up by Cathy and Dan. The kitchen is like home where you'll want for nothing, every kitchen tool is available in the fully equipped kitchen. We kayaked, we read, we hiked, we tooled around the town, and we did nothing! We loved it!!! I hope to go back.

Edgewater waterfront 2 bedrooms 2 baths sunsets

Trenton cottage

2 bedrooms / 2 bathrooms / sleeps 4

“Seaside Heaven...” Edgewater is amazing! Fully stocked kitchen, very comfortable beds, clean as a whistle. At waters edge. And hosts who go out of their way to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. My 2 adult sisters and I stayed here a week in mid June. Mornings on the deck drinking coffee gazing out at the water, low tides spent combing the rocks for shells and such. AMAZING sunsets from the deck while enjoying a bottle of wine. Very quiet and forested, cottages here are not elbow to elbow! A quick trip to MDI and all it's sights and activities. We would not hesitate to book with Bill and Ruth again. The map that pinpoints where the cabin is, at least on this site, is not correct. It is not near Hwy 3 and the small airport, it is just West of Trenton on Union river bay, a very quick trip onto MDI. We loved being off Island, way less traffic. Get your Lobster already cooked at Trenton lobster pound, grab your wine, and have a beautiful evening on the deck. Beautiful place to stay.

“Regular Visitors Sharing Positive Experience” This is our 8th year at Highbrook House and every year gets better. We have witnessed many upgrades to the home over the years. When we walk into the home for our vacation, we are always excited to see the new changes.. We really enjoyed the new kitchen. This is the heart of the home and is "top of the line" with new appliances, pots/pans. What a difference from last year. We really enjoy the Master Suite, large with a sitting area just like the bedroom upstairs where my son and his family stay... Every year we notice new towels and bathroom furnishings so I don't have to bring anything with me. The owner is always on top of anything we need and returns calls promptly. We will be there again this year and look forward to the home, it's surroundings and the peace and quiet of the area... But... we are around the corner from the park and downtown...

Mount Desert house

“Lovely Week on Long Pond” My husband and I, our two girls, and our cockapoo dog, had a great time staying at Windiana III this past July. We stayed for July 4th week. There is so much to do, and being right on the lake was key for us. It was also very secluded. We loved have the floating dock. It gave the kids something to do on the lake beside kayaking. They swam out to the dock and back and even brought their boogie boards to ride the 'waves' when some of the boats went by. The house was clean and nicely furnished. The beds were comfortable and had very nice quilts and bedding. The bathroom was spacious and very new and clean. We had a great week and would love to return next year. Thank you Diana!

About Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park, Maine

The only US National Park in New England, Acadia National Park lies close to the pretty town of Bar Harbor, Maine, attracting almost 3 million visitors a year. Why not make this your next vacation destination and hunt for your perfect accommodation with FlipKey?

About Acadia National Park

This is the oldest designated National Park east of the Mississippi, and it took the name ‘Acadia’ in 1929. The park spans over 47,000 acres, most of which are located on Mount Desert Island. It’s home to more than 273 species of birds, making it a popular spot with local birdwatchers, and you’ll find the Maine state bird, the Chickadee, here.

Dining in Maine absolutely has to involve seafood of some kind, and with lobster and clams this fresh, it would be a shame to miss out! Make sure you stop off at Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound, just before you cross onto Mount Desert Island. Open since the 1950s, this family-run eatery is the best place to try Maine Lobster, lobster stew and steamed clams.

While you're here, don’t miss the park’s beautiful beaches—Echo Lake Beach is the most popular, with warm water and golden sands.

What to do

From hiking and biking to horse-drawn carriage rides, there’s plenty to see and do in Acadia National Park. The park has over 120 miles of hiking trails and carriage roads, but one of the easiest and least strenuous for families is the Bar Harbor Shore Path, which starts at the town pier.

You’ll find an extensive selection of carriage roads which are closed to cars, ideal for exploring on a mountain bike. Park Loop Road runs for 20 miles and is a popular spot with cyclists, and you can rent bikes in Bar Harbor.

Enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride at Wildwood Stables from May-October and stop off at the Jordan Pond House. Built in the late 1800s, you can enjoy afternoon tea and popovers on the lawn, with spectacular views.

Top travel tips

The nearest airport is Hancock County, just 10 miles from the park, with direct flights landing from Boston’s Logan Airport. Bangor International Airport is about an hour’s drive away.

The Island Explorer bus system covers most of the park, stopping at various points of interest – and it’s free. There are bike racks on the bus too if you want to bring your bike.

The weather here can get chilly in the evenings even during the summer, so wearing layers for hiking or boating is a good move.

Not just for lovers of the great outdoors, Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor are a great choice for your family vacation. With over 300 rentals to choose from, you could search for your own cozy shorefront cottage with FlipKey.

Tranquility Cottage
Great cottage, private setting, excellent value.

We found the cottage to be very comfortable and spacious. The master bedroom and bath offered privacy. We had guests and there was more than enough room for all. It has a nice private wooded setting with a wrap around porch and sun room. The kitchen and laundry were fully equipped. The location was great with easy access to spectacular hiking and to quaint villages with nice restaurants. The owner was very easy to deal with and provided a lot of helpful recommendations. We plan to return in the near future.see more
Annie's Outlook at Sunset Cottages
My home in Maine!

This was our 5th time staying at annie's Outlook and it is about as perfect as you can get. Clean, comfortable, quiet, very well-stocked and an unobstructed ocean & island view beyond words. A gem on the 'quietside', well away from the tourist bustle of Bar Harbor but very convenient to Southwest Harbor's markets and restaurants (which are way better than what you will find in BH). Access to aNP is a short drive away. And after a day of hiking, kayaking or whatever, you can come back to annie's and just relax on the deck or sit down by the shore and watch the lobster boats and maybe catch glimpse of an eagle or porpoise. And on a clear night, it's like being in a planetarium. Trust me; it's perfect.see more

An amazing week in Maine

We just spent a lovely week at the Somes House...what a gem! The beds, bedding, towels, and pillows were luxurious, and the home is a trip into the past of the best of Maine. Nothing was forgotten in supplying the home with everything we needed. Our last evening was a sit-down dinner for 8 in a grand dining room with lobsters, fresh corn, and great friends. The "Somesville Library" across the street even let me check out the local must reads --- The Secret Life of Lobsters, and the Lobster Chronicles. The Somes House owners Diane and Win were great and were in the area to make sure our visit was memorable. Be sure to go to the Beech Hill organic farmers' market nearby and the Consignment Shop down the street. Acadia National Park is amazing, and go to Jordan Pond for popovers and lobster stew! We will be back!see more
