“Wonderful vacation spot” This is a great place to stay--even in the dead of winter! Well equipped kitchen (I like to prepare my own meals), great views with the sun streaming in the windows, everything in working order as described in the writeup. Nice location in town. Greybeard is great to work with and responsive to any questions or concerns. Highly recommend for your stay in Black Mountain.

“This was the best house I've ever rented” Monica and John have provided a house in a great location and with everything that you could need for your stay. I was there to find a long term rental and a lot to build on because we are moving to Black Mountain in July. Monica provided me with the name of her realtor who turned out to be very helpful There are great restaurants in town and everyone I met was friendly and helpful. After very busy days this house and its front porch were the perfect place to come back to and relax

“Great, convenient location” Renee' was very helpful and patience when with me when I was making my reservation in recommending a house in an area that would be easy to get to since we had a lot of planned activity requiring us to be in and out over our long week-end. We arrived on Friday, after the office closed. Our key was there and it was easy to find the house, based on the directions. When we arrived we were please to find a delicious loaf of banana bread, a roll of paper towels and a role of tissue paper to get us started. Also, there was liquid dishwashing detergent, dishwashing detergent for the dishwasher, and laundry detergent/fabric softener sheets. We did find the patio a mess, covered in leaves and grime, only 4 washcloths for 8 people, soiled bedspread in master and trouble getting connected to Wi-Fi and the TV (our son was able to figure it out for us. When we tried the next morning to call the office it did not direct us to an extension so we just left a voicemail. So, that being said, my husband and son cleaned the patio so we could use it to grill out(and we gave out of gas before we completely finished cooking), and washed the bedspread and washed washcloths between showers. We also went out and got a few light bulbs to replace some lamps that were out. When I turned in the keys they were very apologetic about not getting our call until Mon and told me that if I had gone to an extension and left a message, someone was always on call and would have called me back. Recommendation is to provide that in writing on the information renters receive regarding checking in and out, only the number of the office was available. All of that being said, we loved the development, the home was very comfortable for all of us, loved the front porch, especially in the morning when having a cup of coffee and the evening when having a glass of wine. We have a son who lives in the area so will definitely be using Greybeard again! Thanks Greybeard and Renee'

“Such a lovely home!” I stayed here on a family vacation and everyone was pleased! The company took care of everything- no glitches about keys, or entry, or other small things. The home was so well maintained, very inviting and the views were fabulous. It's close to the golf course, which made my dad very happy. I recommend this rental to anyone wanting a relaxing stay at Black Mountain, where all your needs will be met.

“Exquisite!!” We cannot even describe how amazing our stay was at Ravenscroft. The location was perfect; the cabin was immaculate; it was as if they knew exactly how we would design and decorate our cabin and had it done just for our visit. My girlfriend and I fell in love with this place. We fell in love with the town and the people. We can't wait to come back and stay longer. I highly recommend this cabin to anyone who wants to get away and explore the beauty of Western North Carolina. Thank you! Cheers!

“We had a wonderful stay and would love to go back” I just want to say that we had a wonderful stay. It is a very clean, well decorated, warm, and welcoming home. We felt like staying at our own home. We all loved it. The owners are very thoughtful that the house has everything one can possibly need for a relaxed stay. The view from the front porch was just marvelous. We would like to go back to this lovely house in the future. We were somewhat concerned about the steep driveway before our arrival but actually it wasn't that bad after we parked our car in the middle of the driveway. Thanks so much for your fine service, and the delicious pumpkin bread is also quite delightful.

Black Mountain house

“Great place” We enjoyed our stay at Sterling Retreat. Great location with fantastic view and all. Easy to make all the arrangements - great, helpful staff at Greybeard Rentals. Only problem that we had was when the power went out there were no candles to light so we could see what we were doing! There was a flash light, but candles would have been really really handy!! And a sharp axe would have been good too to help cut the fire wood into kindling to make a fire (was getting cold with no power even though it was only out for a short time) Other than that we had a lovely stay in this wonderful location. Had some lovely friendly dogs come and visit us too, this made our visit even more homely!

“Beautiful View!” If you are looking for a great mountain view near the quaint town of a Black Mountain you will like this one. It has two living areas, each with a fireplace. It is also handicap friendly. The upstairs fireplace was not working properly. This was my only gripe. The kitchen was great for cooking our chef inspired New Orleans cuisine. The rooms are a nice size and comfortable.

“Wow...tulip Cottage is great!!!” We rented Tulip Cottage in Black Mountain, NC Christmas week 2013 from Greybeard Rentals. We were very pleased!!! The cottage is beautifully furnished and the floors amazing. We especially enjoyed the beautiful electric fireplace in the living room...made us all warm and cozy (especially the first two days and it was cold and raining). My husband and I had the downstairs bedroom and bath and our daughter and her husband had the upstairs bedrooms (2) and bath all to themselves. We loved the area and could have walked to downtown Black Mountain if it had not been so cold. We loved our Christmas vacation spent at Tulip Cottage and hope we can do it again!!!

Nearly Eden | Mountain Getaway with Hot Tub and Fireplace

Black Mountain house

  • 1 bedroom
  • 1 bathroom
  • sleeps 2

“Cozy and private” Nearly Eden is very convenient to Black Mountain and asheville, yet tucked away at the end of a lane, which gives it a lot of privacy. The deck and the front porch were great for enjoying the views (of a hillside and the forest behind) --- I know this would be nice if the weather was good for hanging out outside. Very nice cabin. Perfect for 2 people. Could handle a few more, but with one bathroom, may be a little right.

Sweet Retreat

Black Mountain house

“Cozy, wooded retreat close to asheville, hiking, dining, etc.” Our extended family spent Christmas together at the Byrd's Nest. The best features of this property were the wonderful outside spaces: the fire pit, gas logs on the deck, multiple swings, lots of outdoor seating and the hot tub. They created perfect accomodation for visiting with family and relaxing, even in the cooler weather. The location its great...just minutes from the downtown area of Black Mountain and a short drive from asheville. During our stay we ventured out to asheville and downtown Black Mountain twice. The road to the cabin is unpaved, but not overly rough, steep or narrow. Though the signage into the subdivision is poor, so I'd suggest the initial drive up be indaylight. Inside the cabin, the gathering areas are again perfect for board games, conversation, etc. Though do be aware the 2nd floor den is open to the first floor den immediately below it. This can be distracting if both areas are watching television or gaming at the same time. Also, be aware the televisions are older and are not compatible with newer gaming systems. The kitchen has a lot of stuff! But I felt it lacked some essentials like a working coffee maker and a rolling pin. The only negative aspect of the home was the moldy shower curtain in the master bathroom and the overall dustiness in the nooks and crannies. Overall this home provided a charming backdrop to our holiday vacation!

“Smart Cottage” Greybeard personnel were wonderful. The cottage was adorable. Loved the neighborhood; peace & quiet. The driveway was a tad intimidating but the walk to market & cafe was exhilarating and convenient. Including 2 baths in a 1-bedroom cottage is just Smart! Black Mountain is an adorable, quaint town, and the access to asheville allowed the best of both worlds. Great Choice.

About Black Mountain

Come to Black Mountain, North Carolina for a classic vacation in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Often called North Carolina's Front Porch, Black Mountain and the neighboring towns of Montreat and Swannanoa welcome visitors with friendly Appalachian hospitality, breathtaking vistas, mirror lakes and crystal clear mountain waterfalls.

If you're like many of the visitors who come here every year, you'll want to put on your hiking shoes and head into the wilderness. Explore the vast green mountain landscape that extends for miles in every direction around Montreat and Ridgecrest. Hike, bike, or go horseback riding to stunning overlooks and mountain peaks shrouded in rolling mist. Witness some of the most dramatic views along the Appalachian range and spot elusive wildlife species like black bear, red foxes and otters.

Black Mountain is also the home of Chimney Rock Park, a vital stop on the iconic American road trip. Go rock climbing near Grandfather Mountain, take a rafting trip down the Nantahala River, or just spend an afternoon in total relaxation at a luxury spa or playing a round of golf on the public course. And at the end of the day, enjoy the award winning restaurants downtown.

Here are a few additional suggestions as you plan your trip:

  • Take a walk around Lake Tomahawk: Take a sunset walk around this popular lake in the town's central park.
  • Hike the trails: Try a short hike to Lookout Point or spend the whole day on a strenuous trek across the Seven Sisters mountain range.
  • Come for the Ultra Marathon: Visit Black Mountain to run or just cheer on the participants. The marathon happens every February and extends from Lake Tomahawk all the way up Mt. Mitchell.
  • Go shopping: Stroll the many upscale galleries and Appalachian style craft stores in Black Mountain and charming historic Montreat.
  • Visit the Folk Art Center and the Local Craft Guild: Local craftsmen in Black Mountain specialize in ironwork, bowl turning and pottery throwing.
  • Take a drive along the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway: Stop at the beautiful Craggy Gardens, see the summit of Mt. Mitchell, the tallest peak in the eastern US, and look south along the parkway to see Cold Mountain, made famous in the book by Charles Frazier.

You'll never run out of fun activities and beautiful things to see here. Luckily, finding a vacation rental in Black Mountain is easy, no matter what time of year you visit. Book a cozy cabin, a lakeside villa, or a condo close to the center of town with access to dining, shopping and all the comforts of home.

The Lifedoor Retreat at Black Mountain
Perfect family getaway

The Lifedoor Retreat at Black Mountain was a perfect out of the way spot for our family gathering. The accommodations were clean, well laid out and just far enough from town; yet close enough if a quick trip for forgotten essentials was necessary. We thoroughly enjoyed the house and property. The garden was nicely done, and it would be amazing to return in the next few weeks to see the abundant rhododendron along the creekside in full bloom. We hiked trails in the surrounding area and relaxed by the wood stove, as the weather for early May was unseasonably cool at night. Look forward to returning in the near future !!!see more
