Coral Bay Eco Retreat:Tropical Living Off the Grid, Hike to Beach!

Coral Bay cottage

2 bedrooms / 2 bathrooms / sleeps 2

“Self-contained, off-the-grid mountaintop luxury with a view” Anyone who thinks living off the grid requires sacrifice of comfort clearly hasn't stayed here. Your water is provided by the rain. Your electricity is provided by the sun. A huge deck, cushy living spaces with beds in open air... windows? There aren't any. Shower? Outside. Yes, the toilets flush. And the view is a never-ending masterpiece of sea and sky. Complete privacy here on the mountain top. No neighbors.. except for an occasional island donkey. If you like quiet, romantic places, this is it. The stairs up are steep so if you can't climb, don't come here. But if you can climb stairs, you need to try this place, one of the cheapest luxuries on St. John. and one of the most powerful boosts for the soul one can imagine.

“A great place to stay!” Engaging with Judy Kane right from the start was fantastic. Her sage advice on how best to prepare for our trip with hints as to where to shop, car rentals, ferries and what to expect once we arrived let us know we had landed with a winner. She is a delight; fun loving, outgoing and concerned without being overbearing. The cottage is charming, better in person than the photos on line. It's breathtaking to sit on the deck with mountains that surround you. Birds are everywhere. We spent quite a bit of time reading, enjoying the scenery. The house itself is well stocked with every kind of device you might wish for - TV, DVD player, internet connection, books, games and even iPod speakers. The amount of information Judy has accumulated - a mammoth loose leaf filled with news clippings and articles along with books published about the area - provided us with recommendations for activities to keep us delighted. Each day, we struck out to a different beach to discover new sea life and coral formations we never would have found on our own. Having a car is a must. Judy made that clear to me. We were concerned about driving on the left and the narrow roads. It isn't for the faint of heart, but if you drive slowly and ignore the locals who might honk at you, you will soon adapt. I felt like I was on a freeway by the time I drove in St. Thomas to get back to the airport. I can't wait to return next year. St. John never disappoints me and Lower Carolina makes it even more alluring.

Mooncottage: Most Romantic St. John Petite Luxury Villa in peaceful Coral Bay

Coral Bay villa

2 bedrooms / 4 bathrooms / sleeps 4

“The PERFECT Honeymoon” There truly are not enough positive ways to sum up our 10 nights at Mooncottage. From the very beginning, Brian was a tremendous help as we were researching locations to spend our honeymoon. He made sure to provide us any local "tips" we would need so that there were no surprises along the way. It's hard to trust all of the incredible review online (can Mooncottage really be THAT amazing?!) - but they are all true! The home is beautiful - pictures don't even begin to do justice to the stunning views - and the amount of space was perfect for the 2 of us. We wanted a honeymoon location where we could just relax and never feel like we were on a schedule, and Mooncottage provided the perfect accommodations for that. We spent mornings and nights just taking in all of the scenery below us, and spent our days visiting different beaches, restaurants, and bars each day. We came to embrace the (very bumpy) drive up/down the road to the house, and it's really kind of fun once you get used to it! The privacy is well worth the short extra drive -- and we loved being in Coral Bay on the less populated end of the island. We've already passed the name of the home along to a few of our friends who are looking for a special getaway -- and we can't wait to go back ourselves!

“Amazing Vacation Rental” I have stayed at this property owner's other rental and did not think I could top that..I was wrong! This property was just as, if not more gorgeous than her other place, Mimosa. The views were amazing and we always felt like we exploring the island, even if we never left the villa. One thing that made this great was how easy it was to talk to and work with the owner, easiest vacation I have ever planned. The place was clean and bug/dirt free. I have stayed in quite a few places around St. John and this is by far the nicest. I already booked my vacation for next winter at this property and can't wait. It is private but still has easy access to hiking, swimming, getting to town, it is just an all around great place and I cannot wait to go back. I highly recommend this rental, and I'm picky!

Drake's View: Voted Best View in the Caribbean

Coral Bay villa

4 bedrooms / 5 bathrooms / sleeps 8

“Incredible, Gorgeous View!” Our family stayed at Drake's View June 13th - July 1st, 2013. We needed a villa with 4 bedrooms. It was the "view" from Drake's View that won it over! Wow, what an incredible, gorgeous view of Coral Bay & the Bvi's! The Kit, LR & DR areas are all on the upper level & flow into each other so you always feel a part of what's going on & with several seating areas, you can have your space too! There are 3 bdrms on the lower level in the main house & a private 1 bdrm cottage. All are equal with a/C & kg beds with 1 in the main house having the option to be made into twins. Entry to 1 of the bedrooms in the main house is off the porch so you have to walk outside to get to it. The kit was well equipped & used & so was the BBQ grill. We ate about ½ our meals at the villa while enjoying the view! We used the pool & hot tub just about every day after coming back from the beach. The pool gets good sun until mid-day & is larger than most. It has a gradual slope to deep end & has a built-in bench all along the length of the pool. You can sit there or in the hot tub & enjoy a nice view. The villa has plenty of outdoor seating space, sun & shade, to gather as a group or find a quiet space to yourself! Even though you could see a couple villas on other hillsides, they were far enough away & situated to where we felt complete privacy! In the evenings we enjoyed listening to music on the stereo...speakers worked great...while playing Scrabble & card games. The villa only has 1 TV...no big deal because we don't typically watch TV. The large capacity W/D are on the lower level & conveniently located near the pool's ½ bath for wet suits & towels & near the bdrms. They were used often during our 18 night stay & worked great! We loved Drake's View & the Bordeaux Mtn location...the view, close to Maho Bay & close to our family's favorite Coral Bay restaurant...Shipwreck Landing!

Eco-Friendly 3 BR villa with pool. Stunning Coral Bay views!

Coral Bay villa

3 bedrooms / 3 bathrooms / sleeps 10

“cozy eco home with amazing view of Coral Bay” Had a great family vacation and this home definitely contributed! Was wonderful that we were met at the ferry and guided to the home, we would have for sure been lost if we had to find the place on our own- but it's easy to find once your shown once. It's an eco home with compost toilets that worked well and runs on solar power (great that we didn't lose power with the majority of the island!). The view of Coral Bay and is remarkable, and the pool overlooking the view is also wonderful. It's a cozy home, but definitely could afford some attention and general repairs. Nothing that was too bothersome on its own, but just things that added up and made us wonder where I rent money was going if not back into the home! Broken blinds, foundation crack (!), broken screen door, broken handles to close windows, broken filter for the pool, dull knifes in the kitchen-- mostly little things that in the end just made it feel more like home.

“Perfect getaway with a spectacular view” We absolutely loved our stay at Blue Palm Villa. The facilities are excellent and the location is beyond description! Waking up every morning to see the incredible blue of Coral Bay encircled by lush mountains was unbelievable. The Villa not only has an unbelievable view, but the facilities themselves are beautiful. The pictures do not do it justice. The pool is gorgeous. The amenities are modern and aesthetically wonderful. The gardens around the villa are exquisite. Honestly, it was hard to pull ourselves away from the Villa to go visit other places. It was so nice to relax in that little paradise. But the Villa is also close to many delicious restaurants and awesome beaches. Overall, we do not think there is a better way to see the Virgin Islands than by staying at Blue Palm Villa! We recommend it wholeheartedly!

“Dream Honeymoon” Our visit to St. Thomas and St. John was truly an amazing experience. It was our honeymoon, and we spent a whole week on St. John. We must visited almost every beach while we were there. The little cottage had every thing we needed to cook our own meals, including a grill (i have celiacs, so I can't eat out just anywhere). But there are plenty of restaurants on that side of the island. The view from the porch was really amazing, and bookshelf was full of old maps and nick info about the island. Thia was a great host, and gave a lot of useful advice on where the best beaches and places were for us to visit. It was much more affordable than most of the island and I would certainly stay there again. -Kristen Mallory & Loan Vu

Sweet Wind Villa overlooking Hurricane Hole

Coral Bay house

3 bedrooms / 3 bathrooms / sleeps 8

“Incredible views, wonderful stay” My husband and I booked this rental last minute after finding an incredibly low airfare to St John, and weren't quite sure what to expect. What a amazing find! Sweet Winds is just outside of Coral Bay, overlooking Hurricane Hole, and words can't do justice to the view you'll have from this property. Even the pictures fall short of showing the incredible view we enjoyed from every room in the villa. Sweet Winds is nicely appointed, impeccably clean, and friendly to groups and families as each of the three bedrooms has a bathroom ensuite. Nina Hahler, the owner, lives next door where she paints and tends to her garden (which is also lovely with bougainvillea and gardenia in full bloom). Nina was very accommodating without being intrusive in any way, and gave us a ton of great tips on the best snorkeling spots and restaurants on the East side of the island. She also has kayaks, beach towels and chairs, and all sorts of beach items for kids available to her renters. If you want to break from the packs of tourists, and you don't require the amenities of a big resort, Sweet Winds and the Coral Bay area can't be beat, in our opinion. We highly highly recommend this rental and look forward to coming back with family next year.

Francis Bay Estate: Luxury Villa! Pool! Walk To The Beach!

Coral Bay villa

5 bedrooms / 6 bathrooms / sleeps 10

“Paradise on St. John” If you're staying on St. John, we highly recommend Francis Bay Estate. Catered To met us off the ferry and were very accommodating is getting us settled. It's a wonderful location, house and grounds. The kitchen is well equipped and nicely laid out. The dining and living room are attached to the kitchen area and make for a friendly arrangement. The two upstairs bedrooms are in a completely separate building. We didn't need air conditioning in the upper bedrooms during our March stay. There are wonderful views, especially at sunset over Francis Bay from the upper deck. The estate has large bedrooms, very comfortable beds and a nice attached bathroom for each room. There's a very large lower patio deck surrounding the pool and three bedrooms on this level. Two king bedrooms are in the separate building as the two upstairs beds and the twin beds are in the same structures as the main house. The lower level bedrooms didn't appear to receive the same breeze as the upstairs rooms. There is some traffic noise from cars downshifting to climb the hill on the road adjacent to the house. Francis Bay beach is a very short walk and a great beach. Bring insect repellant as there are no-see-ums that come out at dusk and bite. There are birds that can be annoyance and will snatch food left on an outside table and that do leave bird droppings on the outdoor furniture. Beyond these two very minor points, Francis Bay is staying at your own private resort. It's about a 25 minute, very scenic drive to town on paved, but very windy roads. Do your grocery shopping before arriving. A 4WD vehicle is recommended.

Esprit: Amazing Views of the BVI! Year-Round Breezes!

Coral Bay villa

3 bedrooms / 4 bathrooms / sleeps 6

“Last beautiful trip to St.John” I can't say enough about Esprit or the Catered To staff, they were there when we needed them and not when we didn't. Because of my wife's illness we probably spent more time at the villa than most guests. The views from all the decks is unmatched by any place we have ever stayed. We spent hours just relaxing by the pool or lounging on the main deck. My wife, Donna, and I met on St. John in 1978 and have had a few trips back since then but this, our final trip was by far the most memorable. Donna passed away on December 6th and our stay at Esprit will always have a special place in my heart. She was so thrilled to be able to make one more trip and I am very grateful to the people at Catered To for making that possible.

A dream vacation, we felt on top of the world...

From the moment we arrived on St. John we were taken care of. We exited the car ferry to meet an amazing woman who drove us up to the villa, so from the get go, we didn't have to worry about finding our way around. We arrived at the Villa overlooking Coral Bay and our breath was just taken away by the beauty of the villa itself and by the view of the bay. The place is immaculately taken care of. They have everything you need to stay, from pots, pans and a grill to cook, coolers and chairs to take to the beach to leftover sunscreen and books people have left behind. At night, it's so cool out that you don't have to have the air on, just sleep with the screened doors and you can hear the sounds of nature. It's truly a special place, it's so secluded, and you sit so high above the water that it feels like you're on top of the world! Highly recommend Blue Palm to anyone, whether you are a family or a couple, you'll find the resort is perfect for anyone.see more

Awesome House

I've been to St. John several times over the past 12 years. This is a wonderful house overlooking Coral Bay; a perfect location to come and go from the best beaches around. We will definitely stay here again. We had flight delays that pushed our arrival late into the evening. We were still met at the ferry by our host who took us to the house and explained all the amenities of the home. Thanks Cimarron St. John. Perfect Solo Vacation Experience

I recently returned from my visit to St. John and Coral Bay Eco-Retreat. Allison's welcome was the perfect introduction to St. John and my vacation. I fell in love with every part of her home ... I couldn't wait to wake-up every morning to the sound of the birds, breezes, and coffee while watching the view! Oh my...the view! Don't be intimidated by the "eco" description. It is easy to transition into the needs and requirements of a sustainable lifestyle, especially if you are willing to relax (the purpose of vacation after all!) and leave worries behind. I love Coral Bay and her people. Don't miss a massage by Allison's neighbor, Kathy ... undeniably the best I have every had! I highly recommend Coral Bay Eco-Retreat for those looking for a relaxing, beautiful adventure on their next vacation. I can't wait to return!see more
Eco-friendly Stonegarden Cottage ~ Awesome View in Coral Bay, Sleeps 4-6
Tranquil and expansive view

We loved the Stonengarden cottage on Coral Bay. It took us to a place of quiet privacy that was only broken by the melodious sounds of 1000s of tree frogs serenading us to sleep every night. The mountain road up took us to a beautifully appointed cottage with everything we needed. We were surrounded by jungle and not neighbors. All the furnishings and amenities were perfect. We loved that we could get to our favorite bay, "Salt Pond Bay" in minutes. Come back and enjoy island luxury.see more
Mooncottage: Most Romantic St. John Petite Luxury Villa in peaceful Coral Bay
Even better

Yes, it was even better than the pictures and even better than the reviews. I've only stayed one other place in my many years of traveling that so captured the peace and beauty of a place. I loved the virtual outdoor living, but with screens for dusk when the biting bugs can be annoying. Air conditioning is not needed in the least. One recommendation - float on your back in the pool at night and watch the stars sparkling in the black sky overhead. Also, try the snorkeling at Haulover, on the south side. We were going to try the north side, because we heard it was great, but were a bit intimidated by the swells and the fact that no one else was there. So we tried the south side, and it was great! Just snorkel up both sides of the cove. Although the beach is a bit rocky, there is a sandy area, so spend the extra time to look for it. Also watch out for the sea urchins. They are quite close in to the beach, although spread out enough that you won't step on them if you're watching. Also, our adult daughter and her fiance spent 3 days with us, sleeping on the futon in the living room and it worked well. I don't know if I would put little children there, due to the pool being between the living room and the bedroom, but it would work fine for older children, and the parents still have the romance of their own (adorable!) separate bedroom. They loved Mooncottage too and cried when they left.see more
Eco-Friendly 3 BR villa with pool. Stunning Coral Bay views!
Best view on the island, house is nice but almost of secondary importance

My wife and I have been coming to St. John for years. For the first time ever, we rented the same villa for a second time, and the villa was Satinwood. We also brought another couple to share in the dream. We really like Satinwood for the balance of what it offers. It's not the fanciest villa on the island, and it does have some quirks that some people might not enjoy, such as self-composting toilets with no flush. No odor whatsoever. I say, if you want everything on a trip to be exactly like it is at home, then stay home. :) There, I got that out of the way. But the house is nice, and MORE than sufficient for the needs of anyone who enjoys the outdoor Caribbean life. Here's what we like about it: - Complete privacy at the unique plunge pool - Most stunning view on the island. Do not undervalue this point! - Perfect location if you enjoy both Cruz Bay and Coral Bay, not too far down the East End or South East. - The donkeys live in the Carolina neighborhood. We like donkeys. - Hilltop location means cool breezes - Solar powered/immune from island outages - 5 minutes to Maho, Love City Mini Mart, or Skinny Legs - Price is reasonable compared to some really pricey places with a far lesser view and pool. (Owners: if this ever changes, it will affect our choices - price matters!) Here's what we really didn't like about it: OK that section was short. Here's what some people might take issue with, but come on people, you should be outside anyway so who really cares!: - Kitchen a little dated - Appliances just good enough - Wi-Fi can be spotty If I cared about the quality of the countertops or cabinet doors, I would rate this a 4 star. But since what I care about is a great pool, stunning view, amazing location, fair price, and just the best darn setting in the Lesser Antilles, I rate it a 5 star and highly recommend Satinwood.see more
