About Reno

×

Despite its unfair reputation as a ‘poor man’s Vegas’, the city of Reno, Nevada, has far more to offer than its casinos. Nestled at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, there’s plenty to see and do here. Why not search for your perfect downtown penthouse in Reno with FlipKey?

About Reno

Reno has been called ‘The Biggest Little City in the World’, and it’s easy to see why. Despite its relatively small size, you’ll find world-class dining, luxurious casinos, vibrant nightlife and plenty of outdoor activities all close at hand. It’s just a 22-minute drive to Lake Tahoe and under two hours to some of Nevada’s finest ski resorts. Little wonder that Reno is Nevada’s second-largest tourist destination.

The extension of the railroad here in the 1800s cemented Reno’s popularity as a tourist destination, boosting the economy. When Nevada legalized gambling in 1931, the casinos here got even busier.

Families will find plenty of options for dining, from Thai cafes to Italian restaurants and traditional diners. For the best value, head for some of the large buffet restaurants serving a variety of world cuisine, or check out some of Reno’s best burger joints.

What to do

On sunny days, take a stroll around Rancho San Rafael Park. This 570-acre park is home to the Wilbur D May Museum and the Arboretum. Reno is surrounded by desert terrain that’s perfect for mountain biking. Head for Peavine Mountain Trails or the trails near Lake Tahoe, or for easy road bike trails, make for the Truckee River. For skiing, you’re close to resorts like Mt Rose, or you could drive 20 minutes to Washoe Valley for some spectacular hiking trails at Davis Creek Park.

Gamble to your heart’s content at Reno’s casinos, whether you prefer the glamour of the largest, Grand Sierra Resort, or the traditional vibe of Club Cal Neva.

For shopping, the Riverwalk District and CalAve in the Truckee River Arts District are both popular options. The latter has a range of upscale shops and trendy wine bars!

Top travel tips

Reno’s police have gained a reputation as strict, so keep an eye on your behavior—don’t speed, don’t drink too much and be cautious!

During the summer months, events like the Nevada State Fair and the Great Reno Balloon Race are a great opportunity for people watching.

The nearest airport is Reno-Tahoe International, and car rental is recommended for your vacation as many of the ‘must-see’ attractions are outside the city center.

Summer is the best time to visit, with average temperatures of 23 degrees centigrade. Reno enjoys 300 days of sunshine a year.

Fantastic nightlife, glitzy casinos, world-class dining, shopping and a wealth of outdoor activities combine to make a trip to Reno memorable, whatever you get up to.
