Just a quick drive from the capital of Honolulu and Waikiki Beach, the small coastal town of Kailua is one of Hawaii's most picturesque and accessible beach communities. Overlooking the expansive, sapphire blue Kailua Bay, the town is bordered by a gorgeous white sand beach, often ranked among the best in Hawaii. Bring your book, a beach towel, and a pair of flip flops; you don't need much more to enjoy life in Kailua.
With continuous trade winds rolling off the coast, the climate is always comfortable in sunny Kailua, Hawaii. Thanks to the steady breeze, it is also a great spot for windsurfing and other beach activities, like horseback riding, swimming, kayaking, and snorkeling. If you want to explore the tropical scenery around Kailua, there are also tons of hiking trails in the surrounding Koolau Ridge and the Ka Iwi Ridge.
Here are a few additional suggestions of things to do in Kailua:
-Kailua Beach Park: An uninterrupted two-mile stretch of white sand and blue sea, Kailua Beach has been repeatedly named one of Hawaii's best beaches.
-Lanikai: Just outside Kailua, the small community of Lanikai is home to another incredibly beautiful stretch of sand.
-Honolulu and Waikiki: If you visit Kailua, don't overlook its famous neighbor, the fun capital city of Honolulu.
-Ka'iwa Ridge Trail: Spend a few hours ascending the Ka'iwa Ridge for fabulous views of Kailua Bay below.
-Kawainui Marsh: Just outside Kailua, Hawaii's largest wetland and freshwater lagoon is a wonderful place to observe unusual birds and vegetation.
-Ulupo Heiau State Historic Site: This historic Hawaiian temple was built in the 18th century and is believed to be the former home of several Oahu chiefs.
If you are coming to stay on this piece of paradise, look for a comfortable vacation rental for the family or a luxury villa with ocean views for a romantic getaway. You can also find a condo or apartment for rent, often within walking distance of the waves.
"Absolutely perfect place with a good balance of comfort, privacy and convenience."

This location was within walking distance to the most beautiful beach (we were greeted by a juvenile sea turtle on our first day!) and the BEST little grocery/deli (Kalapawai Market) in addition to being just minutes from Kailua's shopping and street fairs. If you walk/jog/hike this is the place to be!! Accomodations were perfect for me and my son!!
"Lanikai Studios is the most beautiful and friendly place on earth."

Mary and Gary are the BEST hosts we have ever stayed with. We traveled with our two young adult children and rented two units. They both were quite large, very well decorated, and had all of the conveniences that came in handy when enjoying meals on the beach and in the backyard of our unit. Mary is so knowledgeable about the area and so very thoughtful. My favorite part of our stay was getting up early every morning and taking my coffee down to the beach where I could visit with the locals and their dogs. Lanikai Beach is one of the top twenty beached via Conde Nast - and every time we have been back, it just gets more beautiful. We enjoyed about a thirty second walk to the water every evening and watched night come over the Mokolua Islands. Mary and Gary's place is also within a few minutes walk to the Pillbox trailhead. This is a MUST do while you are staying in Lanikai. We have already booked next year and are hoping to bring extended family and friends. Thanks Mary and Gary!
Lanikai Studios was in a great location, conveniently close to the beautiful Lanikai beach. The beds were very comfortable and me had everything we needed. I was travelling with my sister and daughter, and Mary was kind enough to go out and buy a futon the week before we arrived so that my daughter had a comfortable bed to sleep on. Mary was very sweet and accommodating to our requests. We loved our stay and hope to go back again one day. Mahalo!
We loved our stay here. Mary was so nice and friendly. She gave great suggestions for shuttle and taxi services, as well as a whole binder of information on what to do and where to eat in Kailua. This place was also very well located in a quiet, safe residential area. Lanikai beach was just 2 mins away and we got around fine with bicycles into the city.
Would definitely recommend this place.
